Hausen showcases its orchard culture not only through its landscape, but also along its own educational trail. The intact belt of orchards around the village is considered an ecological and cultural feature; around 500 fruit trees are spread across the municipality. For travellers looking to combine nature with regional fruit-growing traditions, this combination is a defining factor when choosing a destination.

An educational trail shaped like a figure eight

The Hausen Orchard Trail follows two loops that together form a figure eight. Seven information boards introduce topics such as the history of fruit growing, the orchard habitat, the diversity of varieties, and how the fruit is used and marketed. The route thus links ecological relationships with cultural history and the question of what happens to the fruit. Around 50 varieties, mostly historic ones, are presented individually along the trail. A variety conservation garden right beside it cultivates 400 apple and pear varieties as a gene bank. The trail is marked with a solid red triangle and follows paved, easy-to-walk paths; the garden complements the variety profiles with the targeted conservation of historic fruit varieties.

The figures refer to different scales: around 500 describes the fruit trees across the municipality, around 50 the variety profiles along the trail, and 400 the apple and pear varieties cultivated in the garden. This gives a picture of Hausen’s focus on orchards through both its trees and the diversity and conservation of its varieties.

Fruit-growing traditions throughout the year

The events calendar also reflects the local fruit-growing traditions. In spring, scions of historic fruit varieties are sold at a scion exchange; the Hausen Orchard Working Group offers pruning and grafting courses every April. The Hausen Apple Market takes place on the third Sunday in October, with a variety of apples on offer. This means practical fruit-tree care and a visit to the market feature in the calendar at different times of year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.

Fruit from the orchards is eaten fresh or processed into juice, fruit brandy, liqueurs, spreads and dried fruit. This highlights another aspect of the topic: in Hausen, the focus is not only on preserving trees and varieties, but also on making use of the fruit.

Walking routes and protected landscapes

Hausen has well-marked routes for walks and hikes. The entire municipality lies within the Rhön Nature Park, and a large part of it is in the Lange Rhön Nature Reserve. Hausen is also a model municipality in the Bavarian Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Orchard culture gives the place its specific character, while the nature park, nature reserve and biosphere reserve describe the wider landscape setting.

Rhön-Grabfeld as a wider setting

The broader destination of Rhön-Grabfeld offers further nature and cultural attractions. Rhön-Grabfeld lies within the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve; the Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps, and the Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone.

Cultural attractions in Rhön-Grabfeld include the fortified church in Ostheim vor der Rhön. It was declared a monument of national importance in 2003 and is Germany’s largest and particularly well-preserved fortified church. The Fortified Churches Museum in Ostheim also showcases a dozen other fortified churches from the region. The Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen offers a different perspective on the history of the landscape: through faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads, it presents 350 years of rural everyday life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. Around 30 historic buildings on a 12-hectare site include farmsteads, craft buildings and a village school.
