At the foot of the Kreuzberg, known as the “Holy Mountain of the Franks,” lies Bischofsheim i.d.Rhön. Hiking and cycling tours go hand in hand here with a historic townscape and traditional crafts: the late Romanesque Zentturm tower, the old town and Germany’s oldest woodcarving school offer a different perspective from the trails through the countryside. When planning your trip, you can focus on outdoor activities, local history or both.

Hiking: a specific tour and a network of trails

Hiking trails and mountain bike routes pass through Haselbach, a district of Bischofsheim, including routes to Kreuzberg and Neustädter Haus. One specific hike runs from Bischofsheim via Osterburg to Kreuzberg. It is steep and shaded, and takes about two and a half hours. If you plan this route, its duration gives you a useful time estimate for this particular hike; its steep ascent is also an important factor in planning your day.

The trail network in the Bischofsheim area includes the premium hiking trail “DER HOCHRHÖNER” and nearly 30 certified circular routes. In total, there are 170 kilometers of marked trails. The Old Town Walk & Wooden Sculpture Trail offers a different way to discover the town: in Bischofsheim, you can explore quiet, picturesque corners, including along the historic town wall. This means you can choose between countryside hikes and a walk focused on the old town.

Cycling trails and mountain bike routes

For a cycling tour, the Brendtal cycle path runs from Bischofsheim to Bad Neustadt. The Bischofsheim an der Rhön Mountain Bike Center offers suggested routes ranging from easy beginner rides to intermediate trails and challenging tours over the highest peaks of the Rhön. The signposted mountain bike routes around Bischofsheim connect places including Wasserkuppe and Kreuzberg.

The Flowtrail is also located on Kreuzberg. It is about two kilometers long and features around 50 performance elements and approximately 180 meters of elevation gain. The cycling options vary in type: the Brendtal cycle path takes you from one place to another, while the mountain bike routes and Flowtrail offer further options for tours and trail riding.

Townscape, crafts and history

The 13th-century Zentturm tower is late Romanesque and is considered a landmark of Bischofsheim. The layout of the town center as a so-called “Franconian circular village” also shapes the character of the town. Germany’s oldest woodcarving school offers another special insight into the town. This craft tradition adds a distinctive cultural focus to its historic architecture.

The multimedia exhibition at the Rentamt focuses on Osterburg: hundreds of archaeological finds illustrate life in and around the castle. Osterburg itself, near Bischofsheim, is a castle ruin in a panoramic setting at an altitude of 700 meters, in the heart of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A trip there brings together a historic site and the landscape around Bischofsheim.

Kreuzberg, above Bischofsheim, also has a long religious tradition and is a place of pilgrimage. It bears the nickname “Holy Mountain of the Franks.” Kreuzberg monastery beer, brewed locally since 1731, is also part of the area’s character. Together with the Zentturm, the town walk and the exhibition, this gives Bischofsheim several distinct ways to explore its history and culture.

Plan your stay around your interests

For a hike, the route via Osterburg and Kreuzberg offers a specific starting point for planning, with its approximate duration. If you would rather choose from a variety of trails, the Bischofsheim area has an extensive network that includes the Hochrhöner and the circular routes. For a more culture-focused trip, the old town walk, Zentturm and exhibition at the Rentamt take center stage.
