Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld brings together viewpoints, historical exhibitions, trails and the FrankenTherme. There are several ways to choose the focus of your stay: a walk, a longer bike ride, the history of the Grabfeld region, or the topics of healing water and saunas.

Viewpoints and trails in Bad Königshofen

The accessible Grabfeldblick viewing platform offers views of the Grabfeld, the Thuringian countryside and the Haßberge hills. Those who want to compare trails by theme and length will find several different options in Bad Königshofen.

The Baumlehr-Allee is a four-kilometre circular trail through the town featuring 110 tree species. It includes the Mediterranean Garden (Monastery Garden), the Celtic Grove (Brügel) and the Sorbus-Rosenwald by the Franconian Saale. The “Culture at Every Step” cultural hiking trail passes through Bad Königshofen, Merkershausen and Annabild before returning; it is about twelve kilometres long. At around 54 kilometres, the bike ride along the former railway line is a longer option: it runs from Bad Königshofen via Bad Neustadt to Bischofsheim. This gives you a choice of two walking trails and a bike ride of distinctly different lengths. Check current trail conditions locally before your visit.

The Schranne, archaeology and border history

The Schranne, a granary built in 1693, houses the Archaeological Museum. It opened there in 1988 as a branch of the State Archaeological Collection in Munich. Following extensive renovations to the building and exhibition, it reopened on 14 May 2019. The Schranne also houses the Stone Age Workshop of the Bad Königshofen Museum Education Centre. It is aimed especially at school classes and groups, and offers insights into the lives and craft techniques of prehistoric people.

The Museum for Border Crossers is located in the former Salt House, one of the Schranne’s buildings. Spanning two floors, it explores life at and with the border in the Grabfeld region. Topics relating to the period before 1945 include close neighbourly ties and a shared dialect and economic area. The years 1945 to 1989 also cover border crossings that were often life-threatening. The remains of Bad Königshofen’s fortification walls and town gates are also worth visiting.

Healing water and saunas

The FrankenTherme Bad Königshofen combines several distinctive water features. Its pools are fed by the two state-recognised healing springs, Regiusquelle and Urbaniquelle. The natural healing-water lake combines genuine healing water with biological purification. The FrankenTherme’s Finnish-Franconian Sauna Village has seven themed saunas, with temperatures ranging from 55°C to 95°C.

The ADAC TopPlatz motorhome site is right next to the FrankenTherme. As capacity and operations may change, check the latest information before your trip.

A wider look at Rhön-Grabfeld

Rhön-Grabfeld also provides regional context: the area lies within the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps; the Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone within the biosphere reserve.
