A 7 km circular hike can start at Pirka campsite, while a second route leads from there through Pirka to Kronberg. This gives you a choice of two hiking routes with different itineraries. A 24 km cycling loop offers a longer option with a different difficulty rating. Cultural and nature-related themes can be found in the wider destination of Viechtach.

Hiking from Pirka

The shorter hike covers 7 km and runs mostly along unpaved forest and meadow paths right beside the Black Regen. It is rated easy and suitable for the whole family. The river and natural paths shape the character of this loop. When choosing a route, therefore, the distance is not the only consideration; the route and scenery matter too.

The second circular hike is 9 km long. It leads from the campsite through Pirka to Kronberg and returns via forest and field paths. It is also rated easy and takes about three hours. There are views across Viechtach along the way. The two loops differ in distance and route: the shorter one follows the Black Regen, while the longer one leads to Kronberg and comes with an approximate duration.

Cycling: a 24 km loop

The 24 km cycling loop is rated moderate. It follows the Black Regen along forest paths to Kronberg and then descends towards Höllenstein Lake on a challenging single-track trail for part of the way. The return route follows the Regental cycle path. In addition to its distance, the challenging section is a defining feature of this loop. This sets it apart from both easy hikes in terms of difficulty rating as well as route.

Cultural and nature-related themes in the wider destination of Viechtach

The Church of St. Augustine in Viechtach features Rococo decorations. These include stucco work on the ceilings and walls, rose garlands and rocaille ornamentation. The decoration thus includes both work on the surfaces and individual decorative motifs.

Viechtach’s Old Town Hall dates back to 1542. The building’s second floor houses a permanent exhibition about the Großer Pfahl nature reserve. The town hall thus brings together a historic building and an exhibition about nature conservation.

The Viechtach Local History Museum focuses on three themes: Viechtach in historical views, images and symbols of popular piety, and linen processing in earlier times. The themes range from cityscapes and religious symbols to a traditional craft. The Viechtach Environmental Education Centre aims to provide environmental education for all age groups.

The Regental cycle path also places the cycling route in a wider context: it is 162 km long, runs between Regensburg and Bayerisch Eisenstein, and passes through Viechtach. The 24 km loop uses it on the return journey; 162 km is the length of the Regental cycle path, not the loop.
