In the Prackenbach municipality district of Moosbach, the Way of the Cross on Calvary Hill is 700 metres long. From the twelfth station, it climbs gently to a natural elevation of the Pfahl; three crosses mark its end. The stations, ascent and destination give the route a clearly defined form—a specific place of interest for anyone interested in religious trails and local history.

Trails in Prackenbach and Moosbach

Groups of visitors come to the Way of the Cross throughout the year, especially during Lent, to walk it and pray. The custom of visiting is therefore connected both with the route itself and with a particular time in the church calendar. To understand the Way of the Cross in context, visitors can consider its length and course as well as its religious significance.

Another hiking trail starts in the centre of Prackenbach and leads to the former Regentalbahn railway line. This railway line was converted into the Regental Cycle Path. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the hiking trail starts in the town centre and leads to the former railway line; the cycle path refers to the converted railway track. The East Bavarian Way of St. James, meanwhile, passes through the municipality of Prackenbach. The routes thus differ in their reference point and scope: a specifically described hike from the town centre, a Way of the Cross in Moosbach, and a route through the municipality.

Church and history in Moosbach

The parish church of St. John in Moosbach was built in the Romanesque style. Moosbach is first mentioned in the Wittelsbach Urbar, a land register, dating from 1222 to 1228. The Schwedenkreuz (Swedish Cross) also stands near Moosbach, a visible relic of earlier ideas about law and justice. Thus, religious trail traditions and a material testament to older legal ideas stand side by side in Moosbach as distinct aspects of cultural history.

More to explore in the Regen travel destination

The Regen travel destination also offers cultural and natural attractions with their own distinctive character. In the town of Regen, the beer and ice cellars are regularly presented on public guided tours as the historic “Regener Underworld,” and their history is explained. There are also 13 terrain therapy trails in and around the town of Regen. The Beer Experience Hike is about five kilometres long, with almost half of the route running directly along the Regen River.

The quartz cliffs near WeiĂźenstein Castle Ruins were placed under nature protection as early as 1940 because of their geological significance. The Pfahl near WeiĂźenstein is also an important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor locations. The Regen travel destination thus combines a cultural-historical offering with protected landscapes and special habitats.

For winter activities, the Grubhügel cross-country ski trail in Regen offers the option of skiing in either skating or classic diagonal style. Skates and equipment can be rented on site at the Regen Ice Sports Centre. These are different ways to enjoy Regen’s winter offerings: on the trail, skiers can choose between two techniques; at the ice sports centre, they can rent skates.
