Habischried is a district of Bischofsmais. The recreation area around Geißkopf and Oberbreitenau lies between the district and the main village. This landscape between the two landmarks shapes the local setting for hiking and cycling tours.

Geißkopf and Oberbreitenau

The recreation area includes the Unterbreitenau ski lift area. The ruins of an abandoned settlement and a high moor are also located there. An observation tower at the mountain station offers views across the border mountains of the Bavarian Forest. This mix of landscape and traces of settlement gives the area a variety of points of interest for an excursion.

Hiking and trails around Habischried

A route guide dated April 2020 describes a circular hike from Habischried that starts and ends at the Geißkopf ski area. According to the guide, the hike includes the observation tower on Geißkopf, which offers panoramic views from the Arber to the Alps; route and viewpoint information may change.

Another route is also linked to Habischried: Tour No. 1, “Bischofsmais – Teufelstisch – Habischried Loop,” passes through the village on the return leg. On the “Habischried Tour,” a level section of trail leads to Habischried. These are specific points of reference when choosing a route; the level section describes only that stretch.

A described cycling tour

A municipal hiking brochure from 2025 describes a cycling tour that passes through Habischried and Unterbreitenau on its return to Bischofsmais and goes by the valley station of the Geißkopf cable car. The route follows wide, well-maintained forest roads and has little asphalt. The brochure describes the cycling tour as family-friendly. This information applies to the tour described.

Daily bus services from Habischried to Regen and Deggendorf are listed. Check the current timetable before travelling so you can plan your journey around the services actually running.

More experiences in the Bischofsmais destination

Winter activities complement the trails and scenery in the wider Bischofsmais destination. In winter, nine runs on the 1,097-metre-high Geißkopf and the neighbouring 1,121-metre-high Einödriegel invite visitors to ski and snowboard. Check with the ski operator to see whether seasonal operations are running during your travel dates.

In Bischofsmais, the Teufelstisch can be reached via hiking trail No. 3. The Bischofsmais Kurpark has a viewing and sledding hill, topped by a 35-tonne rocking stone. These destinations broaden the regional picture beyond the trails around Habischried without implying that they are located in the district itself.

The Baderhaus in Bischofsmais also offers a cultural highlight. Two rooms are dedicated to local writer Max Peinkofer and his brother-in-law, the Bishop of Augsburg, Dr. Joseph Freundorfer. There is a permanent nativity-scene exhibition on the ground floor. The house also hosts events featuring music, readings, and art and photography exhibitions; check the current flyer for dates.

The Bischofsmais reflection trail invites visitors to reflect on their own life journey at various stations. A municipal description from August 2023 also identifies Rock The Hill as a three-day music and mountain biking festival: various courses and an accompanying programme take place during the day, while evenings are usually spent celebrating to rock and metal bands. Check the current festival programme before planning a trip around the event.
