The state border runs right through Bayerisch Eisenstein’s border railway station. Since 2011, the German section of the station has been home to the NaturparkWelten of the Bavarian Forest Nature Park Association. Its exhibition connects railway history with the natural environment of this border town. There are also museums, art and glassmaking, as well as hiking trails that start in the hiking park.
Border Railway Station and Railway History
The NaturparkWelten span five exhibition levels. Their themes and exhibits include a European bat centre, a model railway, a ski museum and an interactive exhibition about the GroĂźer Arber. Those interested in the station as part of railway history can also visit the Localbahnmuseum Bayerisch Eisenstein in town.
The Localbahnmuseum is housed in a former locomotive shed, built in Bayerisch Eisenstein in 1877 by the Königlich privilegierte Aktiengesellschaft der Bayerischen Ostbahn. The tour covers the history of the Bavarian local railway from 1876 to the present day. More than 20 historic steam and diesel locomotives from various periods are on display, along with other exhibits. This offers two distinct ways to explore the subject: the NaturparkWelten link railways with nature, while the Localbahnmuseum focuses on their history and vehicles. Check the operator’s latest information before visiting the NaturparkWelten.
Art, Glass and Historic Buildings
Art and glassmaking are also part of the town’s character. The Kuns(t)räume grenzenlos gallery is 100 metres from the German-Czech border. Together with the border railway station and the Localbahnmuseum, it forms an ensemble of historic buildings. The gallery displays contemporary and regional art, with works by famous artists from past eras added anew each year. This combines a look at art today with changing historical perspectives.
Glassmaking has a long tradition in Bayerisch Eisenstein. The glassworks in Bahnhofsallee builds on this tradition in a modern way. At the GrenzglashĂĽtte, visitors can experience glassmaking at close quarters. Check with the operator for current visiting options. This makes glass a distinct focus of the town, alongside its exhibitions and railway history.
Hiking Trails and Outdoor Activities
All of the town’s hiking trails start at the Bayerisch Eisenstein hiking park. The park includes a natural Kneipp facility and a small adventure playground for children. If these facilities are important to your plans, check the latest information before your visit. The Goldsteig trail stages provide two other named connections: N14 links Großer Arber with Bayerisch Eisenstein, while N15 links Bayerisch Eisenstein with Großer Falkenstein. Route descriptions can change, so it is worth checking the current trail route.
For winter sports, the GroĂźer Arber ski area offers slopes ranging from an easy family run to more challenging descents. This describes the range of slopes, not current operations: facilities and operations may change. If you are weighing up hiking and winter sports, you can consider these different activities without assuming they are tied to a particular season or availability.
Events Throughout the Year
The annual calendar includes events held in different seasons. A New Year’s concert takes place in the village square on January 1, and holidaymakers and locals are invited. In early September, the Bavarian Forest National Park and the municipality of Bayerisch Eisenstein jointly organise a large mushroom exhibition at the Eisensteiner ArberLandHalle. Before travelling, it is advisable to check the dates for the year in question. This lets you include the concert and exhibition as possible reasons for your trip, rather than assuming a recurring event will take place without checking the current calendar.
