A free natural swimming pond with biological water treatment is located in Osterzell next to a public playground; the Marian Grotto and Parish Barn add religious and cultural touches. Local highlights range from the Bible Garden, a place to pause and reflect, to theatre in a listed building. If you choose Osterzell as a travel destination, you can factor swimming, local traditions and culture into your plans without every trip having to focus on the same thing.

Natural Swimming Pond and Playground

The Osterzell natural swimming pond operates as a free, unenclosed open-air swimming area. Check its seasonal opening times before visiting. The water is biologically treated using a purification pond with more than 500 reed plants.

The public playground is right next to the natural swimming pond. Toddlers can use a slide and spring riders, while teenagers can play table tennis and table football. Since spring 2024, the playground grounds have also had a free public drinking fountain. The facilities cater to different age groups, and the fountain adds to what is available on site.

Bible Garden and Religious Sites

The Osterzell Bible Garden brings biblical sayings together with landscape design, works of art and a variety of plants. The garden is a place to pause and reflect. The focus here is on the interplay of text, designed outdoor space and plants—a different emphasis from performances and events in the Parish Barn hall.

Built in 1899, the Marian Grotto is located on the steep slope at Grottensteige and is a place of peace and prayer. Regular May devotions are among the recurring religious services. A candlelight procession to the Marian Grotto has also been held annually since the 1960s. If you are travelling to Osterzell for a devotion or procession, check the specific dates in advance.

The parish church of St. Stephen and Oswald also has an early history: its origins are traced back to a monastic church built by Frankish monks in the mid-8th century, three kilometres east of the Marian cell in Stöttwang. This tradition links Osterzell’s history to a religious origin dating back to the Early Middle Ages.

Culture at the Parish Barn

The listed Parish Barn was an agricultural building belonging to the castle and has been renovated. Since its inauguration on 31 July 1980, its hall, with stage and gallery, has been used for cultural events, parties and celebrations. The building thus combines an earlier agricultural function with a later cultural use.

Theatre performances are held at the Parish Barn. The Bayr. Hiasl Osterzell Theatre Association (Theaterverein Bayr. Hiasl Osterzell e. V.) has a 100-year history. Culture lovers will find a different focus here than in the Bible Garden or at the Marian Grotto: rather than quiet reflection, the emphasis is on performances and events in the hall. Check specific event dates before your trip.

Cycling in Osterzell and the Ostallgäu

The Kleeblattrunde cycling tour through the Ostallgäu runs from Rettenbach am Auerberg, roughly following the Hühnerbach stream to Bidingen and Osterzell. This is a specific route that includes Osterzell. If you add the loop to your plans, check current route conditions before setting off.

In the wider Ostallgäu travel destination, there are also 32 local hiking routes that showcase special natural and village treasures. The Ostallgäu Cycling Travel Region includes regional routes that are 25 to 76 kilometres long, consistently signposted and each dedicated to its own theme. This regional selection offers a broader framework for planning hikes and bike rides, while the Kleeblattrunde describes a named route to Osterzell.
