In Wald, short paths by the pond, river landscapes and longer circular routes offer different options for excursions. The Walder Weiher nature trail is 1.5 kilometres long, follows an information trail through the landscape and is suitable for pushchairs. The Wasenmoos loop is described as an easy walking route for all age groups; it is also suitable for Nordic walking or jogging. The options therefore range from an information trail to a loop suited to different types of exercise.

Choose walking trails by length and landscape

For a manageable route, the 1.4-kilometre Hängesteg trail runs from the Kaltenbrunn car park along the Wertach to the Hängesteg. The loop is family-friendly. The Walder Weiher nature trail is also short. If you are planning a longer outing, the 3.6-kilometre Panoramaweg Bergers includes a section along a farm track, with views across the Wertach Valley and the Alpine panorama. The 8-kilometre Wertach circular trail follows the river through the Wertachtal landscape conservation area; there are opportunities to spot rare flowers along the way. The route lengths provide a direct comparison of the trails without specifying how long they take to walk.

The trails also have different destinations: the Witwe-Bolte trail passes the ponds at Walder Weiher and the Weitmoos before reaching a small pond and an old villa. The circular route at Klosterhof passes the Bodenloser Weiher and kettle lakes, then leads through the Kippach Valley with views of the Alps. If you are interested in the Stations of the Cross, you can plan to walk the two-kilometre trail, which passes wayside shrines and illustrated panels through the Herrnwäldle mixed forest.

Experience ponds, river and forest

Wald is surrounded by hills, forests and ponds that are used for swimming and walking. One of the ponds at Walder Weiher has a sunbathing lawn and a playground for swimming. As leisure conditions can change with the seasons, check local conditions before your visit. When planning your route, consider whether you would prefer to walk alongside the water, seek out views across the valley or experience several landscape features on a circular route.

The municipality of Wald has 46 kilometres of signposted and marked walking trails. The Ostallgäu hiking trail from Marktoberdorf to Nesselwang runs through Wald, the Wertach Valley, Bergers and the area around the Hängesteg. You can return by train or bus; check current connections and local trail conditions before setting out.

Village museum and Wald’s cheese-making tradition

The Wasenmoos loop passes directly by the Wald village museum. It is housed in a small barn in the former rectory garden. The museum displays agricultural equipment and evidence of historic trades, including dairy farming, cooperage and saddlery. Local history can therefore also be explored through the work and crafts that shaped everyday life.

Wald’s historic dairy tradition includes five local dairies and the cheese “Walder Amsel-Gold”. Wald also has a variant of the Way of St James for those interested in pilgrimage routes. Pilgrims can have their pilgrim passports stamped at St Nicholas Church; check in advance whether the church is currently open to visitors.

Getting here and planning your stay

By train, travel via Augsburg or Munich and continue towards FĂĽssen to Marktoberdorf. From there, take a bus or taxi to Wald. Connections and timetables may change, so check them before travelling. The recommended driving route follows the A7 to the Nesselwang-RĂĽckholz exit and continues towards Marktoberdorf; Wald is about seven kilometres beyond RĂĽckholz.

When planning your trip, you can use the route lengths and landscapes as a guide to choosing an excursion: from a short path by the pond, to the family-friendly route at the Hängesteg, to the longer circular trail in the Wertach Valley. The local trails, village museum and cheese-making tradition offer different highlights for a stay in Wald.
