The Lake Forggensee landscape, cycling routes and listed farmhouses offer different starting points for planning a trip to Horn. Lake Forggensee, a first-order lake, was created artificially by damming the Lech and lies west of the Horn Nord area. Those interested in the paths through the district can choose from routes with different itineraries; the historic buildings offer a different focus.

Cycling Routes and Paths around Lake Forggensee

The Schwangau Loop first passes through the district of Horn and then follows the shore of Lake Forggensee. The Kleine Allgäuer Seentour takes a different route: it leads from Waltenhofen to Horn and then continues past the Lech dam towards Füssen. The routes described therefore differ mainly in which sections follow Horn and where the rest of each route leads.

The Schwangau Circular Trail also connects several landscape features: it leads from Alterschrofen through Horn and then along the shore of Lake Forggensee below the district. The routes differ in their respective itineraries. Check local conditions before setting out. The wider travel destination of Schwangau also has well-maintained paths for walks and bike rides, including leisurely loops around the lakes, scenic hikes at higher elevations and sporty mountain-bike tours.

Farmhouses and Local History

Horn is home to two listed farmhouses, each with its own architectural features. The farmhouse at FrauenbergstraĂźe 56 has a Schwangau-style balcony. Its core dates from the 17th or 18th century; the building is marked with the date 1783. A divided semi-detached house is located at Am Ehberg 32/34. The west section is marked with the date 1767, while the east section was built in 1842 with a gabled door and a segmental-arched barn entrance. The dates therefore provide different information about the two buildings and their parts.

Names and stories passed down over time also form part of the local history. Frauenberg is associated with Horn and was still called Mariaberg around 1850. Local history in Horn also recounts that the Bishop of Augsburg is said to have given lands to St. Mang Abbey in 1183. Information boards about the history of Lake Forggensee stand on the lakeshore in Horn, opposite the festival theatre.

Bus and Train Connections

Horn is connected via the Schwangau transport network to FĂĽssen station, Hohenschwangau, Alterschrofen, the village centre, Waltenhofen, Brunnen and Bannwaldsee. Holders of the Schwangau Guest Card and KĂ–NIGSCARD can travel free of charge in second class on the listed bus and train connections. Check the relevant connection for your specific journey.
