Two medieval castle ruins, a Baroque pilgrimage church, and regional cheese and beer offerings give Eisenberg a distinct character for a stay combining culture and food. The ruins of Eisenberg and Hohenfreyberg form a group of castles visible from far away above the town; Hohenfreyberg stands opposite the Eisenberg ruins. This places two distinct castle histories at the heart of the experience, complemented by a church, museum, and regional products.
Two Castles, Different Building Periods
Eisenberg Castle Ruin is a medieval hilltop castle built around 1315 by the Edelfrei lords of Hohenegg. Hohenfreyberg, by contrast, is a late-medieval hilltop castle: Friedrich von Freyberg zu Eisenberg had it built from 1418 onward. It is considered one of the last major new castle constructions of the Middle Ages. Comparing their dates shows two distinctly different phases of castle building. Both sites are located above Eisenberg and are part of the group of castles visible from far away.
In Zell, a district of the municipality of Eisenberg, the Eisenberg Castle Museum displays archaeological finds from excavations at both castle ruins and presents them in an accessible way. The finds add an archaeological perspective to the history of the castles. The Maria-Hilf pilgrimage church offers a different focus: the church dates from the 17th century and is Baroque; its furnishings are distinguished by ornate Rococo altars and impressive carvings. Medieval architectural history and Baroque church art thus stand side by side as distinct cultural themes.
Hiking and Views
The starting point for the Eisenberg-Hohenfreyberg castle hike is clearly specified for your planning: it begins at the town hall or the tourist information office in Eisenberg. There is also a wooden viewing platform at the Eisenberg castle ruin. From there, the view stretches across Zell, a district of Eisenberg, the municipality of Pfronten, and the mountain panorama beyond. The viewpoint adds views of nearby places and landscapes to the historical themes.
Cheese, Beer, and Regional Products
The Weizern mountain cheese dairy in Eisenberg makes cheese and dairy specialties from fresh, daily-produced Allgäu whole milk supplied by regional hay-milk farmers. Tours for groups and coach groups are available by prior arrangement; visitors can also sample cheese and dairy specialties. If you would like to plan a tour, please bear in mind that advance booking is required.
The Mariahilfer Sudhaus in Eisenberg has its own brewery and serves regional cuisine and a variety of its own beers. Brewery tours last about an hour and are available by arrangement. The visitor arrangements therefore differ: the dairy offers tours for groups and coach groups and requires advance booking, while brewery tours are available by arrangement.
Near the destination, the Beer and Cheese Hike is an educational trail with five stops between the Lehern dairy near Hopferau and the Mariahilfer Sudhaus in Speiden near Eisenberg. Information boards explain the art of brewing beer and the production of raw-milk cheese. While the tours focus on individual producers, the trail brings both themes together through its stops and information.
