The Marien-Seelen Chapel on the hill above Eggenthal is the town’s landmark. The Stations of the Cross, circular walk and cycling excursions offer different experiences: they take you to sacred buildings, through the town’s lanes and to destinations in the municipality.

Chapel, Stations of the Cross and Church Guide

A Stations of the Cross path leads uphill to the Baroque Maria Seelenberg Chapel, the town’s landmark. A printed church guide is available at the Marien-Seelen Chapel. It describes the chapel’s history and features in detail, providing a useful addition for anyone who would like to learn more about the building.

The chapel on the hill and the path leading up to it are a cultural highlight of Eggenthal. The description of the chapel as a “landmark” is also linked to the Stations of the Cross path to the Baroque Maria Seelenberg Chapel. A castle once stood in Eggenthal’s Rechtlewald around 2,000 years ago—a further historical point of interest, this time looking back to the distant past.

Circular Walk and Cycling Excursions

A circular walk starts at St. Afra Church in Eggenthal and passes through lanes to the south before reaching the edge of town. Short but somewhat more challenging cycling excursions include rides to Irsee or to the hamlet community of Holzstetten. Holzstetten is in the municipality of Eggenthal. This gives you a choice of different routes and destinations to plan your trip: a circular walk through town or cycling excursions to the destinations mentioned here.

The Ostallgäu as a wider travel destination

In the Ostallgäu, the mountains in the southwest of the district belong to the Vilser Gebirge, while those in the southeast belong to the Ammergebirge. At 2,082 metres, the Hochplatte is the highest mountain in the Ostallgäu. The Forggensee offers a different perspective on the landscape: covering more than 15 km², it is Bavaria’s fifth-largest lake and Germany’s largest reservoir. The Forggensee cycling circuit runs around the lake. During the summer season, Forggensee boat trips operate regularly; if you’re planning a trip, it’s best to check the timetable in advance.

The Ostallgäu’s regional character is also reflected in its routes. The RadReiseRegion comprises themed regional routes that extend throughout the Ostallgäu. Each is 25 to 76 kilometres long and signposted along its entire length. For walking, the region has 32 local routes that showcase special natural and local attractions. These regional options complement the short, somewhat more challenging cycling excursions mentioned for the municipality of Eggenthal.

The Ostallgäu’s cultural attractions include a range of destinations: Since 12 July 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof Palace, the King’s House on Schachen and Herrenchiemsee Palace have together been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau can only be visited as part of a guided tour. In Obergünzburg, the South Seas Collection, alongside the local history museum, now displays more than 1,500 everyday and cultural objects.

In winter, the Alpspitzbahn Nesselwang provides access to the ski run around the 1,575-metre-high Alpspitz. The ski area has family-friendly slopes and a children’s ski area. Operating conditions may vary for this seasonal offering.
