Wildpoldsried can be explored on two walks with different focuses: the Wolkenberger Herren Weg takes in traces of earlier land use and a castle ruin, while “From the Village through the Moor” follows the Leubas past wet meadows and leads to village sights. These routes are complemented by energy days for interested groups and the WiWaLaMoor educational trail. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to focus primarily on local history, streams and meadows, or a group activity.
Local history on the Wolkenberger Herren Weg
A memorial stone on the Wolkenberger Herren Weg marks the site of the former Upper Farmyard. The former brewery is also on this site. The Wolkenberg ruin stands on the castle hill along the route; the Wolkenberg Mill, also on the route, is the former castle mill. The mill pond can be seen from the grounds above the mill. Along the way, you will encounter several points of interest: the former farmyard site with the brewery, the castle hill with its ruin, and the surroundings of the former castle mill. The pond adds a visible landscape feature to this local and architectural history.
Along the stream and through the moor
The “From the Village through the Moor” walk follows the Leubas northwards along the stream and crosses wet meadows that are mown only once a year. During the walk, you can also visit the Dorfboind and Germany’s first school built using the Brettstapel method. Allow a good hour for the walk. Compared with the Wolkenberger Herren Weg, the focus here shifts to the stream, the meadows and the two village sights. You can choose between the walks according to your interests: wet meadows and the Leubas on one, earlier places of work, the castle and the mill on the other.
Group activities and learning sites
Wildpoldsried offers energy days for interested groups, including municipal councillors, residents, universities and Agenda groups. The programme includes an excursion, a presentation and visits. It is a group activity with several components, aimed at different groups interested in energy topics.
Another way to explore the area is the WiWaLaMoor educational trail. Its InfoStadel brings together information about WiWaLaMoor and the topic of water in an open-air classroom. While the energy days combine an excursion, a presentation and visits, the InfoStadel is a place to explore the educational trail’s themes alongside water. Both activities therefore offer a different focus from the walks exploring local history and wet meadows.
More highlights in the Oberallgäu
The wider Oberallgäu destination also offers activities in other towns. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. Visitors can tour the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill; the tower lift takes them to the viewing platform on the ski jump tower. Winter sports are another focus there: the World Championships cross-country ski trail network at the Nordic Centre Oberstdorf/Allgäu includes more than 30 route variations. These include a 6.25-kilometre loop with the steep Burgstall climb; the routes are seasonal.
In Immenstadt-Bühl, the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre is right by Lake Alpsee. Its free-entry interactive exhibition covers animals, plants, their habitats and the protected area’s special features; opening arrangements may vary. From Immenstadt railway station, you can reach the centre on foot in 30 minutes via the “Achis Water Trail” themed route. In bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. Check current bus availability and walking time before setting out. These examples in the Oberallgäu complement Wildpoldsried with distinctive nature and leisure activities in Oberstdorf and Immenstadt-Bühl.
