In Weitnau, you can explore three different reasons to visit: hiking trails, the traditional autumn market and local cultural history. The focus of your stay depends on whether you’re planning a marked route, a set date in September or a visit centered on religious folk art.
Hiking trails with different destinations
A well-marked hiking route leads from the center of Weitnau south along the Carl Hirnbein Trail toward Hauchenberg and Alpkönig. The Terrainkurweg (terrain therapy trail) leads from Weitnau via Sonneck along a forest road to Alttrauchburg. The descriptions indicate different landmarks: the Carl Hirnbein Trail is identified by its southerly direction and Hauchenberg and Alpkönig, while the Terrainkurweg runs via Sonneck and a forest road to Alttrauchburg.
In Kleinweiler-Hofen, near Weitnau, a hiking educational trail also leads to the ruins of Alt-Trauchburg. This gives you a choice of a route starting in the town center, a trail via Sonneck, and an educational trail in Kleinweiler-Hofen.
Local history and religious folk art
The main town of Weitnau has historic buildings and a neo-Gothic church. The Hohenegg Museum, in the Historic Amtshaus (administrative building) in Weitnau, is dedicated to religious folk art. The collection includes pilgrimage souvenirs, votive offerings, rosaries and reliquary crosses. The pieces were collected mainly by Herbert Zenker, a headteacher in Weitnau. The collection thus brings together different forms of religious folk art and the story of how it was assembled.
The autumn market as a planning point
The traditional autumn market in Weitnau takes place every year on the second Saturday in September.
