Oy-Mittelberg offers different ways to explore the area: The approximately 42-kilometre-long “Auf Seiner Spur” faith and church trail leads through the pre-Alpine natural and cultural landscape of the entire municipality, connecting churches and chapels. There is also a loop of just under 12 kilometres around Grüntensee. When planning, it is therefore important to consider whether you prefer a longer trail divided into stages or a single loop around the lake.
Hiking, themed trails and cycling tours
“Auf Seiner Spur” can be explored on foot or by bicycle and is divided into three stages. The route connects the natural and cultural landscape with the municipality’s churches and chapels; the stages offer a different way to plan your trip than a single loop. Oy-Mittelberg also has easy to moderately challenging, well-signposted hiking trails around Rottachsee, Grüntensee, Schwarzenberger Weiher and Sticher Weiher, including numerous circular routes.
The Grüntensee circular trail starts at the car park by the Schützenheim in Haslach and follows a loop of just under 12 kilometres around the lake. If you choose the Mittelberg Panorama Trail, the Nordic walking loop starts at the car park by St. Michael’s Church. The Panorama Trail offers views across the Alpine chain, including the Zugspitze and Säuling. Many paths and themed trails around Oy-Mittelberg are suitable for pushchairs and offer play opportunities for families.
Cycling is another way to experience the landscape: the Mittelberg–Rottachsee cycling tour leads from Mittelberg through woodland and meadows into the Rottach Valley. At Rottachsee, the “Moosaikreich” offers information and discoveries from the Allgäu Moor Alliance. This gives you a choice of signposted hiking routes, a specific lake loop, Nordic walking and a longer cycling tour.
Churches, geology and village life
The parish church of St. Michael in Mittelberg was built in 1453. It stands 1,036 metres above sea level and is one of the highest-altitude parish churches in Germany. The parish and pilgrimage church of Heilig Kreuz in Maria Rain was built in 1496. The two construction dates and different locations offer a tangible introduction to church history in Oy-Mittelberg.
If you are interested in the landscape and how it formed, the Steinmeile offers a nature and geology trail around Oy-Mittelberg. Its stops provide information about the geology of the Allgäu and the Mittelberg Ridge, the history of the landscape’s formation and the cultural history of the region. Mittelberg is also home to Germany’s largest hiking bench—a destination in its own right alongside the paths and churches.
The annual cattle drive in autumn is also part of village life and a tradition in Haslach. It marks the season, while the trails and churches appeal to other interests. GrĂĽntensee and the seasons
In summer, water sports, swimming, fishing and sailing are possible at GrĂĽntensee in Haslach. Several summer activities are available at the same location, while the church trails, Steinmeile and hiking routes offer different experiences.
Winter brings its own options: Mittelberg has cleared winter walking trails and groomed sledding hills.
