Diepolz brings together ecclesiastical architecture and insights into the world of Allgäu mountain farming. It also offers the Kuhnigundenweg, a family adventure trail, and routes with different highlights: groomed winter hiking trails on the one hand, and a panoramic circular route with views of the Nagelfluh mountain range on the other.

Mountain Farming Life and the Kuhnigundenweg

The Allgäu Mountain Farmers’ Museum in Immenstadt-Diepolz lies at an altitude of over 1,000 m. As an open-air museum, it presents the lives of Allgäu mountain farmers, past and present, in historic buildings. Topics include traditional animal breeds, farm work and Allgäu alpine farming and dairy production; engaging hands-on activities complement the displays.

The museum farm offers insights into everyday farm work. This includes feeding, milking and mucking out, as well as driving the animals out to pasture. The Kuhnigundenweg is a family adventure trail in Diepolz, with play and information stations around the Allgäu Mountain Farmers’ Museum. The museum and trail each focus on different aspects: the museum centres on mountain farming life and farm work, while the trail’s play and information stations add to the experience.

Sattler Farm and Courses

Sattler Farm is a 300-year-old log-built farmhouse, originally located in Schöllang near Oberstdorf, which was moved to Diepolz in 2007. Its history connects its original location with its later home in Diepolz. By prior arrangement, Sattler Farm offers educational activities and courses for all age groups. These include butter-making and courses on bees, herbs and felting.

The Architectural History of St. Blasius

St. Blasius Church was largely rebuilt between 1509 and 1517, remodelled in the Baroque style in 1783/84 and redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style in 1889. Older furnishings include a baptismal font dating from 1490; distinctive keystones are found in the chancel arches. The sequence of renovations shows how different styles have shaped the church.

The furnishings also include a sacrament house north of the high altar, as well as paintings of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and the Stations of the Cross in the nave. A processional cross dates from the first half of the 13th century. The striking Neo-Gothic coffered ceiling with zodiac signs is another notable feature of St. Blasius. The church brings together very different details, from the medieval cross and baptismal font to the Neo-Gothic design.

Winter Hiking Trails and Panoramic Circular Route

In winter, around 25 kilometres of groomed winter hiking trails run from Stein to Diepolz and from Akams to Knottenried. Another option is the panoramic circular route from Diepolz to Akams. It reaches an elevation of 1,060 metres and offers views of the Nagelfluh mountain range. The details highlight different planning considerations: for the winter trails, the season, approximate length and route connections matter; for the panoramic route, its elevation and views define its character.

Immenstadt i.Allgäu as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Immenstadt i.Allgäu also offers its own cultural and seasonal attractions. The Hofmühle Museum is a regional museum specialising in the upper Allgäu, with an exhibition area of 1,000 m². The MuseoApp Immenstadt offers an augmented reality experience around the former royal residence town, as well as at the Hofmühle Museum and the Mountain Farmers’ Museum in Diepolz.

The traditional Immenstadt Christkindlesmarkt takes place every year on the first weekend of Advent in Marienplatz and Klosterplatz. It features arts and crafts, Christmas treats and musical entertainment. The traditional Viehscheid in Immenstadt is held on the third Saturday in September and is accompanied by a party in the festival tent. These regular seasonal dates provide a distinct regional context alongside the winter hiking trails and the cultural and farming themes in Diepolz.
