Cross-country ski trails, cycling connections and an open-air theatre give Altusried a range of attractions for a stay. When planning, the season and specific event dates are particularly important: the trails depend on snow, and the theatre offers a changing programme. In Frauenzell, there is also a church and a village museum.

Hiking, cross-country skiing and cycling routes

The Oberallgäu Circular Hiking Trail and the Way of St James pass through Altusried. In winter, cross-country ski trails are groomed when snow conditions are good. Various loops can be skied over a total of around 26 kilometres. This offers two distinct types of route: hiking and pilgrimage trails that pass through the town, and cross-country skiing loops, which require good snow conditions. Check the current trail status before setting out.

For cycling tours, there are scenic routes and a well-developed network of cycle paths. Continuous cycling connections run from Frauenzell in the west, across Altusried, to the city of Kempten. The final sections of the network were completed in 2018. While the ski trails offer various loops, a notable point of reference for the cycling network is the continuous connection from Frauenzell via Altusried to Kempten.

Open-air theatre and culture in Frauenzell

Every three years, the Allgäu Open-Air Theatre stages outdoor plays, musicals and fairy tales; operas, operettas and concerts are also held in between. Since the productions vary, check the dates if you want a performance to determine your travel period. The theatre is located just below the village of Im Tal, right next to the outdoor swimming pool. A heated outdoor pool is also part of the local leisure offering.

In Frauenzell, you can visit the early 18th-century Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary and the Raritäten-Kästle village museum. The museum displays more than 500 historical objects, most of them from the region. Together, a church rooted in local history and a regionally focused collection offer two different cultural perspectives. Check current visiting arrangements before planning a museum visit. Altusried is also a suitable venue for the Allgäu-Swabia Literature Festival; if the festival is a deciding factor in your trip, it is worth checking the current dates.

More to explore in the wider Oberallgäu destination

The wider Oberallgäu destination offers further nature and cultural attractions. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. You can also visit the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill there; visitors can take the tower lift to the observation platform on top of the ski jump tower. The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre in Immenstadt-Bühl is located right by Lake Alpsee. Its free-to-enter interactive exhibition covers animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area. Check current visitor arrangements in advance. In Immenstadt-Diepolz, the interactive Allgäu Mountain Farmers Museum documents the lives of Allgäu mountain farmers in historic buildings.

The other activities also differ considerably: the Breitachklamm gorge can be explored on well-maintained, secured paths; conditions may vary seasonally. The Starzlachklamm gorge between Burgberg and Sonthofen is a starting point for hiking and canyoning. At the Grünten Ore Mines Adventure World, a guided hike leads to old mine tunnels and offers insights into the work of the miners of the time. The World Championship trail network at the Nordic Centre Oberstdorf/Allgäu includes more than 30 route variations. These include a 6.25-kilometre loop with the steep Burgstall ascent; trail availability varies by season.
