Weisendorf combines a chain of ponds stretching for around seven kilometres with historic sites and seasonal church fairs. Three themes can help guide your choice of stay: pond landscapes, cultural history and visiting during the festival season. If you are planning your trip around a hike or an event, keep the approximate time on the route or the specific date in mind.

Pond landscapes and pond culture

A chain of ponds stretching for around seven kilometres runs through Weisendorf. It begins at the hamlet of Sintmannsbuch and extends as far as the town. In the TeichKulturPark, “Badweiher Weisendorf” is listed as panel 11. The park and the TeichKulturWochen help visitors understand how pond farming works.

Together, these offer two perspectives on the same subject: the chain of ponds shapes the landscape, while the park and the TeichKulturWochen add context about pond farming. If this theme will shape your stay, check the programme details in advance, as they may change.

Castles and a chapel: history across different periods

From 1957 to 2023, Weisendorf Castle housed the German branch of the “Notre-Dame de Vie” (“Our Lady of Life”) institute. For its German members, the castle was a place of quiet and fellowship, rest and prayer, and spiritual and physical renewal. Its use through 2023 gives the castle a clearly defined institutional and spiritual connection to history.

The history of Neuenbürg Castle goes back further: it was first mentioned in an official document in 1165 as “Nuvenburg”. In 1388, Nuremberg troops captured the castle after a long siege and burned it down. In Reuth, the Marienkapelle (Chapel of St Mary) provides a different historical landmark: it was solemnly consecrated on 1 August 1999 by His Eminence Domkapitular Klemens Fink.

The two castle histories represent different periods: Neuenbürg Castle is associated primarily with its early documentary record and destruction in the 14th century, while Weisendorf Castle is associated with institutional use that continued through 2023. Together with the chapel’s precisely dated consecration, they offer a range of historical points of interest for a stay.

Church fairs and recurring events

Church fairs are held in Weisendorf and its districts between May and October. Traditional customs include raising the Kerwa trees and the “Betzentanz” (a traditional dance). Every year, the Weisendorf Heritage Association holds a museum church fair on the first Sunday in May and a St John’s bonfire in June.

The museum church fair falls at the start of the church-fair season, while the St John’s bonfire is another seasonal highlight in June. These recurring patterns can help you choose a general time to travel. Check the specific dates separately for the year you plan to visit.

One route and two running formats

The second section of the 100-Weiher-Weg (100 Ponds Trail) runs from Weisendorf to Gremsdorf. It is 11.2 kilometres long and takes around 3.5 hours. This gives you a specific, though approximate, time estimate to factor into your day’s plans. As route conditions may change, check the latest information before setting out.

The HochstraĂźenlauf has a different focus: it follows a section of the medieval trade route from Nuremberg to Frankfurt through Weisendorf Forest and includes a walking route as well as a 9.7-kilometre main race. For the 100-Weiher-Weg, the route and its approximate duration are specified; for the HochstraĂźenlauf, the two formats are the focus. If you are travelling for an event, check the latest calendar.
