Burgtreswitz combines castle history with routes linking the town to Moosbach and other places. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering two questions: Would you like to focus on the history of the castle and village church, or make a cycling or hiking route the main feature of your stay? When looking for a holiday apartment, it may help to weigh up these interests first.

The Castle and Village History

Burgtreswitz Castle probably dates back to a foundation by the Counts of Sulzbach in the early 12th century. During the Thirty Years’ War, imperial troops largely burned down the medieval castle complex. The presumed founding and wartime destruction mark different chapters in the castle’s history.

The castle museum features a model of a glass-polishing workshop and a shoemaker’s workshop. The castle also houses a nature park information centre with a permanent exhibition. The village church of Maria Immaculata is another historic point of interest: her parents, Anna and Joachim, are depicted on either side of the altar. In January 2020, the village church was 160 years old.

There is also specific information about accessibility: Burgtreswitz Castle is accessible to visitors with disabilities and has a passenger lift. These two features of the castle can be taken into account when planning, alongside its historical attractions.

Guided Tours and Events at the Castle

Guided tours of Burgtreswitz Castle are free in 2026. At least six people must take part, and registration is required by 12 noon, two days in advance. Keep these conditions in mind when planning a tour. The historically themed, spooky castle experience tour “Gënsbloud & G’schling” takes you through the castle grounds.

A Christmas market is held in and around Burgtreswitz Castle on the second weekend of Advent. Rooms are also available for private celebrations: weddings and birthdays can be held in the New Hall, the Bräustüberl or the wine cellar. Please arrange the details directly.

Comparing Cycling and Hiking Routes

The Pfreimdtal Cycle Route runs from Pfreimd via Trausnitz, Tännesberg, Burgtreswitz, Moosbach and Lohma to Eslarn. History Trail 1 takes a different route: from Moosbach via Burgtreswitz, Isgier and Heumaden, then back to Moosbach; it is 18 km long.

Another route is the 80 km Glassmakers’ Trail, a circular cultural and historical hiking route through Moosbach and Burgtreswitz that explores the subject of glass along the way. The two routes with stated distances differ in length: History Trail 1 is 18 km, while the Glassmakers’ Trail is 80 km. The longer trail also has a cultural and historical focus on glass.

In Moosbach, the Moosbach Loop is a circular hiking route around the town. Among its special highlights, in addition to Burgtreswitz Castle, are the mills and former glass-polishing workshops along the route, which keep the area’s glassmaking tradition alive. The routes offer a choice of different paths and connections to local history and glass culture.

A Closer Look at Moosbach

At the eastern edge of Moosbach lies Gruberbach Generations Park, an eight-hectare recreation and leisure area. The park includes walking trails, a small larch grove and numerous places to sit. It also has a seasonal 18-hole mini-golf course. The course complies with the guidelines of the German Minigolf Association and is suitable for competitions.

The park offers something different from the castle and historic routes: it combines a leisure area with trails, places to sit and mini-golf. Together with the historical and glass-related attractions, this gives you a choice of different interests when planning your trip, without combining the routes into a fixed itinerary.
