In Kohlberg, you can choose between two routes with different focuses: the signposted Klingenbach Valley Nature Experience Trail is a circular route of about 3 km; the hike along historic roads is about 6.2 km long. The first route focuses on habitats and land use, while the second explores historic roads and notable landmarks such as the summit cross on KohlbĂĽhl. This makes it easy to plan according to route length and personal interests.

Nature and Landscape in the Klingenbach Valley

Information boards along the Nature Experience Trail cover various habitats and the use of the landscape. Alongside its length, they give the circular route a thematic focus: hikers can explore different aspects of the surroundings rather than seeing the trail simply as a connection between start and finish.

An orchard meadow has been established in the area of the Nature Experience Trail. Fruit trees representing 35 different varieties of apple, pear and plum have been planted along the White Way and Amber Road. The orchard meadow and plantings complement the information boards’ themes with concrete examples of the local landscape and its use.

Hiking on Historic Roads

The approximately 6.2 km hike begins on FlurstraĂźe, a few metres east of the Catholic church in Kohlberg. It is the longer of the two routes described. If you want to decide first based on distance, you can compare the approximately 3 km circular route in the Klingenbach Valley as the shorter option with the hike along the historic roads as the longer one; their focuses also differ.

A detour from the hike along the historic roads leads to the summit cross on KohlbĂĽhl. At 588 metres, this is the highest point in the Kohlberg Heights. Another notable point along the hike is the Dreifaltigkeit viewpoint: from there, the view stretches west as far as the Franconian Jura. The summit cross and viewpoint offer different intermediate destinations on the longer route.

Historic Connections and Cycle Route

The Amber Road is also part of Kohlberg’s history. It was one of several historic routes between the North and Baltic Seas and the Adriatic Sea, and passed through Kohlberg. Its origins are thought to date back to pre-Christian times. Its course thus connects the area with a far-reaching historic route, while its stated origins remain explicitly uncertain.

St Nicholas Church offers another way to place the town within a wider route network: it lies on Route 7 of the Simultaneous Churches Cycle Route. In addition to the hiking trails, Kohlberg therefore also has a connection to a named cycle route.
