A distinctive local cultural highlight in Kirchendemenreuth is the parish church of St. John the Baptist. Its coffered ceiling, tower renovated in 1766, and Rococo high altar tell different stories about visual art, architectural history, and the origins of a furnishing.

The Parish Church of St. John the Baptist

The coffered ceiling features Helena with the cross, Veronica with the cloth of Veronica, an angel with the Instruments of the Passion, as well as John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, all shown in marbled frames. The iconographic program gives the church interior a clearly defined art-historical theme: alongside the two figures of John are saints and depictions of the Passion.

The tower was renovated in 1766; the dome and colonnade also date from this period. Another clue leads to the Rococo high altar: it comes from the demolished church at Barbaraberg near Speinshart and was restored during the church’s major renovation. Together, these offer three different perspectives on the parish church—the ceiling’s iconographic program, the tower’s architectural history, and the altar’s origins.

Cycling and rail travel in the wider Neustadt An Der Waldnaab destination

The Neustadt an der Waldnaab district is located in the Upper Palatinate Forest destination. Regional activities include hiking, cycling, museum visits, and swimming in numerous bathing waters. For cycle tourists, Route 10 of the Simultankirchen cycle route and the Bockl offer different points of reference.

Route 10 starts at Windischeschenbach station and heads towards Kirchendemenreuth. Windischeschenbach and Reuth bei Erbendorf are listed as rail connections for the route. Check timetable details with the transport operator before travelling; it is also worth checking the latest route information before setting off.

The Bockl is a 52-kilometre route from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn along a historic railway line. It can be used on foot, by bike, or on inline skates. The route is mostly paved and traffic-free; gradients rarely exceed 3 percent. Neustadt an der Waldnaab, the starting point, is accessible by train: trains run hourly to the terminus of the Nuremberg–Neustadt an der Waldnaab line, where you can transfer directly to your bike. Check the timetable in advance for this route, too. Route 10 focuses on direction and rail connections, while the Bockl offers a set route length and a choice of ways to get around.

Cultural and natural attractions in the region

In Speinshart, the monastery church is linked with a rich Baroque history: it is one of the most significant Baroque buildings in southern Germany and is distinguished by its Italian High Baroque furnishings. The monastery and its preserved historic village together constitute a cultural heritage site of European significance. A public guided tour of the monastery church takes place at 3 pm on Sundays and public holidays. As times may change, check the monastery’s website before your visit.

Parkstein combines a historic walking tour with the Vulkanerlebnis Museum: the tour begins at Landrichterschloss, which houses the museum. A volcanic eruption is simulated there every hour and can be experienced across three levels; check the times in advance. In 2003, Parkstein’s basalt cone was included on the list of Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes, and in 2006 it was awarded the designation National Geotope.

Those considering a nature route will find a roughly 750-metre stretch of the Girnitz stream in the Doost Nature Reserve, flowing through a sea of massive, rounded granite boulders. Several hiking trails lead there from Neustadt/WN, Weiden, or FloĂź. For a culinary addition, Windischeschenbach is known for Zoigl beer: 17 Zoigl hosts there, including 12 traditional communal brewers, take turns serving this beer specialty in their Zoigl taverns on weekends. Numbers and serving dates may change; check before visiting.
