The only grape variety trail in Middle Franconia is located on the Bullenheimer Berg. The grape varieties grown there are explained in detail. This puts the focus on specific varieties and how they are cultivated locally—offering a distinctive way to explore viticulture during a stay in Ippesheim.

The hiking trails start in Ippesheim at Lichtenstein Castle and take about one to three hours, depending on your stamina. They lead through fields and vineyards, follow the Iff from mill to mill, or climb up to the Frankenberg. You can choose based on the time you have available and the direction that interests you: the timings provide a rough guide, while the destinations take in different landscapes.

Wine tastings are another way to experience the area: you can sample locally produced wines at wineries and seasonal wine taverns. Opening times vary by establishment and season. If you are planning a tasting, contact the winery in advance.

A reconstruction of the burial of “Ippsi,” along with other archaeological finds, can be viewed at Ippesheim Castle. You must contact the municipal office in advance to arrange a visit. To avoid confusion, note that the visit takes place at Ippesheim Castle, while the hiking trails start at Lichtenstein Castle. Plan to see the finds only after making an inquiry.

Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim district is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is particularly easy to explore on foot or by bike. Its cycling network features themed routes for a range of abilities, from leisurely rides to more challenging cycling. The district is also crossed by the “vom Main zur Zenn” long-distance cycle route, which is just under 100 kilometres long and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The themed routes and this named long-distance connection offer different scales for choosing a route in the region.

For culture, the Franconian Open Air Museum in Bad Windsheim offers a focus of its own: a visit is like a journey through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. One notable building within the museum is the Bauhofstadel. Built between 1441 and 1444, its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supporting columns. This example of historic architecture adds another dimension to the museum’s comprehensive portrayal of everyday Franconian history.

Local specialities are also tied to the seasons. In Neustadt an der Aisch, AischgrĂĽnder mirror carp is one of the local specialities. It is served from September to April, including crispy fried or blue in broth. The AischgrĂĽnder carp weeks take place every year from 1 September to 1 November at selected restaurants in the district; check in advance which establishments are participating. The game weeks follow each year in November, offering game meat prepared in a variety of ways. Check the current programme before travelling.
