Ergersheim is a wine village where juniper pastures and mixed woodland managed using traditional coppicing shape its connection to nature. The village lies between the northern foothills of the Steigerwald and the southern foothills of the Frankenhöhe, directly on the Middle Franconian Bocksbeutelstraße wine route. For planning your trip, hiking and cycling offer an active way to explore; the history of the municipality to which it belongs adds further clearly located destinations to the picture.
Hiking and cycling
The juniper pastures and mixed woodland managed using traditional coppicing offer hiking opportunities in Ergersheim with an unspoiled character. If you would like to make nature and exercise the focus of your stay, these landscape features are a specific starting point for your visit.
Cycling and hiking are among the leisure activities in Ergersheim and the surrounding area. The 135-kilometre Aischtal Cycle Path is cited as a cycling option in the region. Its total length gives you an idea of the route’s scale without specifying a particular section in the village.
The European Watershed Trail is also cited as a hiking and cycling option in Ergersheim and the surrounding area. The 97-kilometre trail runs from Ansbach to Schnelldorf along the European watershed on the heights of the Frankenhöhe Nature Park. The two routes mentioned therefore also differ in terms of activity: the Aischtal Cycle Path is a cycling option, while the Watershed Trail is suitable for hiking and cycling tours.
Wine village and local products
Ergersheim is a wine village in Franconia’s “Mehrregion” and lies directly on the Middle Franconian Bocksbeutelstraße wine route. Wine is therefore part of the local character, alongside opportunities to explore the landscape on foot or by bike.
The range at Winzerhof Hofmann in Ergersheim includes wine and Secco, grape juice, and spirits. The availability of individual products may vary seasonally. If you are looking for a particular product, it is advisable to check availability in advance.
History in the municipality
In Ermetzhofen, a district of the municipality of Ergersheim, the Jewish cemetery preserves a tahara house and around 400 gravestones dating from 1791 to 1936. The cemetery served as a district cemetery for the Jewish communities of Burgbernheim, Ermetzhofen, Gnodstadt, Uffenheim, and Welbhausen. The history of several communities, not just that of the present-day district, can be traced at this site.
The entrance to the cemetery is on Bergtshofener Straße and can be reached via a farm track. If you are planning a visit, check the current access arrangements in advance.
Two mills in Ermetzhofen also have early documented mentions: the Obermühle was first mentioned in 1277, and the Kellermühle in 1352. These dates mark the first documented mention of each mill and give both mills a distinct historical connection within the municipality.
Nature in the municipality
The municipality of Ergersheim has three nature reserves covering a total area of about 400 hectares. One is in Ergersheim, and the other two are in the district of Seenheim. This distribution highlights the difference between the village of Ergersheim and the larger municipal area: one reserve is in the village, while the other two are in Seenheim.
About Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim
For a broader perspective beyond the village, the wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim offers additional cultural and culinary experiences. In Bad Windsheim, a tour of the Franconian Open-Air Museum is like a journey through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. The Bauhofstadel there was built in 1441–1444; its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of about 360 square metres without supports.
In Neustadt an der Aisch, the Aischgründer Carp Museum devotes ten rooms to the more than 1,250-year-old tradition of carp farming. The Aischgründer mirror carp is also among the local specialties there: it is served from September to April, including crispy fried or poached in a seasoned broth. These regional cultural and culinary experiences represent destinations in Bad Windsheim and Neustadt an der Aisch and complement Ergersheim’s distinct landscape and village features.
