Two city gates and closely packed historic houses frame the Historic Market Square in Freystadt. At the southern city gate stands the Spital zu Freystadt, a cultural monument of national significance dating from the 13th century. The market square and its buildings provide a tangible starting point for the cultural program; several routes include the square or Freystadt as a stage destination.

Market Square, Towers and Pilgrimage Church

The Powder Tower in Betzgarten is a surviving part of Freystadt’s former fortifications. The Maria Hilf Pilgrimage Church is another attraction. Its gleaming green dome is framed by four towers and crowned with a gilded Madonna. In Freystadt, the Tour de Baroque passes the Historic Market Square and the Asam stucco work in the pilgrimage church.

Visitors who see the towers of the Upper and Lower Gates and climb to the upper level are rewarded with views over the historic market square and the Schwarzach Valley. Since current access should be checked before your trip, it is advisable to ask before firmly planning the climb. Exhibitions under the title “Art in the Tower” are regularly held in the Upper Gate Tower in spring and autumn. Check the dates if you would like to visit an exhibition.

Routes with Different Roles for Each Stage

The Tour de Baroque runs from Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz via Freystadt to Berching, then follows the former Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal back to its starting point. In Freystadt, it passes the Historic Market Square and the Asam stucco work in Maria Hilf. Freystadt is a stage destination on the Five Rivers Cycle Route. These two examples show the different ways the town features on routes: once as a stop on a described itinerary, and once as a stage destination on a cycle route.

The hiking routes also differ in their roles. The “On to Sulzbürg” hike starts at the market square and heads southeast, following the Jura Trail–Lake District spur marker. The “Blue Stripe,” also known as the Berching Way, is a 58-kilometer hike; its first stage ends in Freystadt. When choosing a hike, the distinction is clear: one starts at the market square, while Freystadt is the endpoint of the first stage of the other.

Nature Watching and Seasonal Swimming

A seven-meter-high birdwatching tower stands at the edge of the Schwarzach Valley meadows. From there, you can look out over the nature reserve. The seasonal Freystadt natural swimming lake has a swimming area, a children’s playground, a beach volleyball court, fitness equipment and a table tennis table. These facilities are freely accessible and free to use. Plan your visit as a seasonal activity and check in advance whether the natural swimming lake will be open on your chosen date.

Regional Setting and Accommodation Search

Within the broader destination of Neumarkt In Der Oberpfalz, the Neumarkt district is located in the northeastern part of Altmühltal Nature Park and in the Bayerischer Jura landscape region. This provides context about the district and complements the overview of Freystadt’s own buildings and attractions.

The routes already differ in whether Freystadt is named as a starting point or a stage destination. For exhibitions, access to the towers and a visit to the natural swimming lake, it is a good idea to check dates or current accessibility in advance.
