Dietfurt a.d.Altmühl is a town in Bavaria, nestled in the natural landscapes of the Altmühltal Nature Park. Seven valleys, the Altmühl, the Main-Danube Canal and other waterways offer visitors different perspectives on water and landscape. During your stay, you can plan nature and cultural activities side by side: a themed trail, cycling sections along the canal, archaeological sites and a museum each offer their own focus.
Explore the Waterways on Foot, by Bike and by Canoe
The Dietfurt Waterways – Technology and Nature (W2) themed trail is an easy, five-kilometre educational route for families. It contrasts a lock on the Main-Danube Canal and the historic lock on the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal with natural oxbow lakes and river courses along the Altmühl. This connection between water engineering and river landscape is the trail’s central theme. W2 starts at the Dietfurt landing stage, where parking is available. Check route conditions before setting out.
For a different perspective on the waterways, the Dietfurt–Riedenburg cycling section to Mühlbach follows the Main-Danube Canal and includes sites in the Altmühltal Archaeology Park. The Altmühl canoe route through the nature park stretches for just under 120 kilometres between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging. This gives you a choice of a five-kilometre trail, a cycling section with archaeological sites and a longer canoe route to suit different plans.
Archaeology and Landscape History
The Altmühltal Archaeology Park comprises 18 sites between Kelheim, Essing, Riedenburg and Dietfurt. From Dietfurt, you can explore the park in the direction of Kelheim along the Altmühltal Cycle Path. All sites are free of charge and freely accessible; check these conditions before travelling, as access arrangements may change.
An exhibition at the Museum im Hollerhaus explores the development of Dietfurt’s settlements and landscape over the past 4,000 years. Collections of rocks, minerals and fossils also explain the geological development of the area. Archaeological excavations show that settlements from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages existed around Dietfurt. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1109; by 1416, the place was already referred to as a town. The museum, archaeological finds and sites in the park thus offer different ways to discover the history of the landscape.
Getting Around the Town
The Museum im Hollerhaus is in the centre of Dietfurt; the Weiherstraße bus stop is 500 metres away. If you plan to travel by bus, check the latest services before setting off. The grounds of the Alcmona adventure village in Dietfurt are another specific point of interest and are freely accessible.
The Kulturhaus Dietfurt hosts annual cooking evenings featuring Chinese specialities. If an evening like this fits your plans, check the specific dates before travelling. This lets you consider your interests in history, landscape and a culinary cultural offering side by side when planning your trip.
