A fully preserved 15th-century town wall and two canals running through Berching give the town a distinctive character. There are various focuses to choose from for your stay: the fortifications, the Gluck Museum, routes in the surrounding area and leisure activities in town. This lets you plan your trip around the topics that interest you most.
Town Wall and Waterways
The town wall dates from the 15th century and is fully preserved. It includes 13 towers and four gates. The waterways also differ considerably: the historic Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal and the modern Main-Danube Canal both run through Berching. Together, the wall and canals offer two distinct points of interest in the townscape: the historic fortifications and the waterways that pass through the town.
The Franconian Water Cycle Path runs through Berching’s historic old town to the promenade on the Main-Danube Canal. This makes it possible to combine the route with a specific destination in town. If you would rather choose a hiking trail, Berching also has several different options, including routes to the lime sinter terraces of Hoher Brunnen and to former vineyard walls.
Gluck Museum and Regional Collections
The Gluck Museum Berching is dedicated to Christoph Willibald Gluck. A multimedia presentation introduces the composer’s life and work. The Gluck exhibition is on the ground floor; the first floor features rural furniture, traditional costumes and collections from the region. The museum thus brings together the composer and other regional collection themes. If culture is the focus of your stay, you can explore both themes in the same building.
Hikes with Different Route Features
The hiking trail to Hoher Brunnen starts in Berching, leads to the lime sinter terraces of Hoher Brunnen and returns to Berching along the Main-Danube Canal. The Weinbergmauern loop of the Benediktusweg, by contrast, is a circular tour just over six kilometres long. Along the way, you can discover remnants of the former vineyard walls of the Benedictine monks near Berching. The two routes therefore differ both in their described course and in that the loop is specified as an approximate length and a circular tour.
The Berching Crime Trail also offers a different way to spend your stay: this interactive crime-solving experience takes place outdoors. Participants investigate using their smartphones and start at Bettelvogtturm. You can start at any time, without making an appointment. You will need a crime file, arrest warrant code, pen and internet-enabled mobile phone. This information helps you plan what to bring before setting off.
Parks and Seasonal Leisure
Hans Kuffer Park is situated on the Sulz in the heart of the historic old town and offers places to sit and relax. Children can climb, splash about and play there. The park thus combines a place to unwind with activities for children. Berle adventure pool is another leisure option in Berching for swimming and splashing about. The pool is seasonal; if you would like to include it in your trip, check the current dates in advance.
