Schrobenhausen combines a historic old town with a strong asparagus tradition. The 15th-century town wall surrounds the old town; preserved sections of the wall, defensive towers and a green rampart bring the town’s history to life in the streetscape. This gives you two distinct thematic highlights for a trip that brings together culture and regional food traditions.
Town History and Asparagus Culture
The museum quarter is home to the Town Museum in Pflegschloss and the European Asparagus Museum, right beside the historic town wall. Town history and asparagus culture come together here in the same quarter. The European Asparagus Museum’s collection includes an asparagus-themed lidded box from Meissen dating to 1780 and a pair of asparagus tongs made by Russian court jeweller Carl Peter Fabergé in 1890. The two dates are 110 years apart, offering a concrete comparison across time. At the same time, the different objects show how individual collection pieces can help visitors explore asparagus culture.
Explore the Old Town on Your Own
The free “Entdecke Schrobenhausen” (“Discover Schrobenhausen”) city app lets you explore the historic old town on your own or discover it on the “Walk around the Town Rampart” and “Crafts and Trade” routes. Check in advance whether the app is currently available, as its availability may change. Another way to take in the Schrobenhausen asparagus region is a circular cycling tour that starts in the heart of Schrobenhausen’s old town. You can choose between different ways to explore: walks focused on the old town and a bike tour starting in the historic town centre.
Asparagus as a Seasonal Highlight
Schrobenhausen is considered the home of Schrobenhausen asparagus and one of Bavaria’s 100 culinary destinations. Traditionally, asparagus takes centre stage there until St John’s Day on 24 June, the last day of the asparagus harvest. Harvest dates can vary depending on conditions. If asparagus season is important to your travel plans, check the conditions in advance. This keeps the seasonal aspect in your plans without assuming a specific harvest date.
Neuburg-Schrobenhausen: Regional Context
The wider destination of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen offers a broader perspective on regional contrasts. The landscape of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen ranges from bizarre rock formations in the north, through the Danube floodplain forest and the Donaumoos with its deep black soil, to the characteristic asparagus fields of the Schrobenhausen region in the south. This range of landscapes complements the local themes of the old town and asparagus.
The wider destination also has a distinct cultural-history highlight: Neuburg Residence Palace is a significant early Renaissance complex, built by Count Palatine Ottheinrich between 1530 and 1545. The palace chapel is among the oldest Protestant church buildings in the world and features frescoes by Hans Bocksberger dating to 1543. Its architectural history and surviving frescoes offer a different focus from Schrobenhausen’s town wall and the collection pieces in the asparagus museum.
For regional cycling plans, 63 kilometres of the Danube Cycle Path are relevant: they run through Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district from Donauwörth to Ingolstadt. Temporary diversions may occur. Nature enthusiasts can also explore the wet meadows of the meadow-breeder conservation areas in the Donaumoos and the Paar Valley. These are important habitats for the great bustard, lapwing, meadow pipit, corn bunting, whinchat, corncrake and common snipe.
