Putzbrunn: Local History and Cycling Routes

Putzbrunn lies just beyond Munich’s city limits and has retained its rural character to this day. This is a useful first point of reference when looking for a hotel: the history of its churches and associations meets practical cycling routes here. When planning your stay, you can give these themes different weight—local architecture and customs, or cycling. The local details give the destination more than one possible focus.

Churches from Different Eras

The older Catholic Church of St. Stephen in Putzbrunn was built from 1723 under the direction of Weyarn Abbey and consecrated in August 1725. It is still used for various occasions today. The new parish church of St. Stephen was consecrated on September 26, 1993. It has a modern design, a shape reminiscent of a tent roof, and is filled with light. The altarpiece follows Wassily Kandinsky’s color theory and depicts the martyrdom of Saint Stephen.

The two churches of St. Stephen can be viewed as distinct examples of their respective eras and styles: the older church is notable for its building history and its consecration in the early 18th century, while the new church features a modern design and color-based imagery. St. Anne’s Chapel also broadens the picture of Putzbrunn’s religious heritage: it is located in Oedenstockach, a district of the municipality, and was renovated inside and out in 2023.

Local Customs and Culture at the Civic Center

The Putzbrunn Young Men’s Association was founded in 1893 and maintains traditional customs. The Maypole tradition includes sourcing, preparing and guarding the tree, as well as erecting it in the town center every five years. The association also holds the annual Nightgown Ball at the civic center. The two customs therefore differ considerably in frequency: the ball takes place every year, while the Maypole is erected every five years.

Another cultural event with a specific date is linked to the civic center: in 2013, it hosted cabaret, music and theater events as part of the “Culture in Putzbrunn” project. If your visit focuses on local customs, the difference between the annual ball and the Maypole celebration is a useful point of reference; check the specific event date before traveling.

Cycling and Getting There

Putzbrunn’s road and cycle-path network connects to the Munich Cycle Ring and the Isar Panorama Trail. Both are specific starting points for recreational cycling tours; as route conditions may change, check the latest route information before setting out. MVV regional buses connect Putzbrunn to Munich’s rapid transit network. For specific connections and departure times, consult the current MVV timetable.

When choosing your stay, you can weigh up a focus on cultural history, a visit centered on a local custom, or planning cycling tours. For the first, the churches and association history are key; for the other two, check the event date or the latest route information. The bus connection is another useful option if you want to coordinate your journey with Munich’s rapid transit network.
