The Path of History is a good starting point for getting to know Waldkraiburg through its city history. This circular route passes buildings and places that have been important to the city’s history since the end of the Second World War. Its 18 stops connect images and texts with the places themselves. They include the House of Culture, Ölberg, the former fire watchtower, Bunker 29, the bunker church, the old railway station, and the former women’s camp. The route is signposted throughout the city with yellow-and-blue waymarkers and ground markings. This gives your exploration of the city a historical thread, leading through several places and a range of stops.
City History Along the Route and in the Museum
Bunker 29, the Waldkraiburg-Aschau Industrial Museum, is housed in an original, preserved building from the 1940 powder factory on Schweidnitzer Weg. The history of Waldkraiburg and its industry is presented in six rooms. Bunker 29 is also a stop on the Path of History. Here, the circular route meets a museum with a clear focus on the city and industry.
The Waldkraiburg City Museum features an original interview with Peter Maffay about his musical beginnings in Waldkraiburg. The artist gave the interview exclusively for the museum. It adds a personal perspective on music and biography to the architectural and industrial themes.
Glass, Collections, and Art
The Glass Museum focuses on historic glassware from North Bohemia. Films, photographs, pictures, and objects offer insights into glass and its production, as well as the techniques and methods used. The subject therefore encompasses both the historic objects and the processes and methods involved in their manufacture.
The Bavarian Fire Brigade Museum also offers a historical perspective, with exhibits dating back to the 19th century. Set up as a display collection, the local heritage room presents cultural artifacts of the German population in the Adler Mountains. Its time span runs from around 1900 to the expulsion. The two collections thus offer different perspectives: exhibits looking back as far as the 19th century in one, and the cultural history of a specific population over a clearly defined period in the other.
The Waldkraiburg Municipal Gallery explores a wide range of aspects of art and culture. Themed and solo exhibitions present important artistic perspectives, including those from beyond the region and from abroad, and address current topics and questions. The gallery thus complements the historical collections with art that engages with the present. As individual exhibitions may change, it is a good idea to check the current program before visiting.
For choosing a theme, it is useful to distinguish between the route and the museums: the route connects several locations, while each museum brings together its own areas of focus. This can help you decide whether Waldkraiburg’s city history itself or a specific subject such as glass, industry, music, or art should be the cultural focus of your stay.
