Buchbach is a market town in the district of Mühldorf am Inn in Bavaria. The routes highlight field monuments, chapels and wayside crosses, and tell their stories. The town’s market history and the plague cross offer further historical points of interest; the leisure park at Bräuweiher adds a place to relax in the town centre. This gives you a choice of different ways to explore: a tour, a trail through cultural history, or a look at the facilities in the centre.
Walking and cycling routes to suit you
Buchbach’s walking and cycling routes explore the history of field monuments, chapels and wayside crosses. The Buchbach Radlspaß is a 29-kilometre cycling route around Buchbach. Route details may change if local trail conditions change; check them before setting out.
A longer option is the route “Hike around the market town of Buchbach,” which is about 33.3 kilometres long. The estimated time is approximately 6 to 8 hours on foot or 2 to 3 hours by bicycle. This makes it longer than the Radlspaß; the time estimates also distinguish between walking and cycling. Buchbach’s routes offer opportunities for shorter or longer outings, including options for families, children and older adults. Check trail conditions before setting out, especially if you are planning the longer route.
Market history and religious heritage
Buchbach was recorded as a market town in 1266; in 1275, it received the privilege of holding goods markets. These dates refer to two separate milestones: its mention as a market town and the later granting of market rights for goods. The plague cross on the southern edge of town commemorates the victims of the plague recorded for the year 1634.
Schmiedberg Chapel is a Marian chapel with an image of the Madonna and Child. The original image may have been replaced or copied. Together with the town’s historical market records and the plague cross, the chapel offers another, religious perspective on Buchbach’s history.
Leisure park and cultural centre
The leisure park at Bräuweiher is a place to relax in the town centre. Its facilities include a water play area for children, barefoot and Kneipp areas, a beach volleyball court and a public toilet. If you plan to use a particular facility, check its current availability before travelling.
The Buchbach Cultural Centre is intended as a venue for all kinds of events and for cultural collaboration with the districts of MĂĽhldorf, Erding and Landshut. Specific events and dates may change, so check the latest schedule if you are planning a cultural evening.
MĂĽhldorf am Inn as a regional addition
In Mühldorf am Inn, the 500-metre-long town square, with its colourful façades in the Inn-Salzach architectural style, shapes the townscape. The Salzburg High Fountain in the town square was a gift from Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Johannes Ernst von Thun in 1692. At the entrance to the square stands the Nagelschmied Tower, also known as the Munich Gate; it is the oldest building in the town.
The two “Traidkästen,” Haberkasten and Kornkasten, were built as grain stores in the 15th century. A courtyard lies between them, and Haberkasten was later converted into a cultural centre. The summer festival in the Haberkasten courtyard has been held annually during the first two weeks of July since 1999. Check the specific dates if this period is relevant to your trip.
The Mühldorf History Centre and Museum explores the district’s history through exhibitions, discussions, workshops and museum education programmes. The permanent exhibition “Everyday Life, Armament, Extermination” presents the district’s history during the Nazi era. The exhibition “Lifeline Inn” focuses on life with the river and how it is managed today. Specific exhibitions and programmes may change.
