Ampfing offers a clear contrast between the Green Lagoon, sports facilities and cultural sites with historical themes. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay on water and exercise or on local history. When planning, consider specific conditions: winter use of the lagoon requires prolonged frost, and you should check the current availability of individual recreational facilities.
The Green Lagoon: Water and Exercise
The Green Lagoon covers almost 40,000 m². It includes a 5,000 m² swimming pond and a 1,500 m² regeneration pond. The water area is divided into a swimming area and a shallow-water area designed to blend with nature. The site also includes sports and sunbathing areas, a beach volleyball court, a Kneipp pool, and wet and dry playgrounds for children.
The grounds of the Green Lagoon at HinmĂĽhler Weg 27 include a recreational facility with table tennis tables, a slackline, beach volleyball courts, a multi-battle obstacle course and an OCR ninja training obstacle. Alongside the water areas, the focus is therefore also on specific opportunities for exercise and play. A footbridge over the Isen provides a short connection between the Green Lagoon and the town for pedestrians and cyclists. If you plan to use this route, ask locally about any temporary closures.
During prolonged frosty weather, the Green Lagoon is used for Bavarian curling and ice skating. These winter activities explicitly depend on the weather. They are therefore a seasonal option, not a guaranteed alternative regardless of conditions.
Sports and Exercise
The Ampfing Sports and Recreation Centre offers opportunities for football, tennis, roller hockey, swimming, beach volleyball, horse riding and gliding. The selection ranges from ball and racquet sports to water activities and gliding. Check with the respective operators to see which activities are currently available.
Ampfing also has a modern outdoor go-kart track with floodlighting. As you should check whether it is currently operating before your visit, it is advisable to enquire in advance. The Ampfing Activity Park includes a fitness trail with seven stations, a mini trampoline, a spinning disc and a bouldering wall. Located in the Sports and Recreation Centre, it complements the sports mentioned there with individual exercise stations and a climbing option.
Church and Industrial Monument
The Wimpasing branch church is also known as the Schweppermann Chapel. Its ceiling fresco depicts a scene from the 1322 battle. The name and image give the site a specific historical connection without the need for a long list of other sights.
The Ampfing Industrial Monument offers another perspective on local history. It comprises four exhibits on energy generation: a pump jack on the subject of oil production, a photovoltaic system, a traction engine and a windmill used to produce drinking water. The exhibits bring together different technical subjects, from oil production and photovoltaics to drinking water production.
MĂĽhldorf Am Inn: Additional Cultural Context
In the wider destination of Mühldorf Am Inn, the district town of Mühldorf a. Inn offers its own urban cultural context. Its 500-metre-long town square is lined with colourful façades in the Inn-Salzach architectural style. The Salzburg High Fountain in the square was a gift from Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Johannes Ernst von Thun in 1692. A short stroll through Mühldorf a. Inn’s old town offers a glimpse of the district town’s history and architectural beauty.
The two Traidkästen, Haberkasten and Kornkasten, were built as grain stores in the 15th century, with a courtyard between them. The Haberkasten was later converted into a cultural centre. Since 1999, the courtyard has hosted the summer festival every year during the first two weeks of July. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.
The exhibitions at the Mühldorf a. Inn History Centre and Museum also cover different themes. The permanent exhibition “Everyday Life, Armament, Extermination” explores the history of the district of Mühldorf during the Nazi era. The exhibition “Lifeline Inn” shows how people have lived with the river and how it is managed today.
