Rüdenau combines whisky experiences at St. Kilian with hiking trails and distinctive evidence of the town’s history. This gives you a choice of different highlights when planning your visit: a guided tour of whisky production, a trail with a Christmas-themed destination or a longer mountain hike. The parish church of St. Ottilia and the Ottilienbrunnen fountain also give the town its own distinctive architectural character.

Whisky Tours at St. Kilian

The Discoverer Tour lasts 90 minutes and includes a guided walk through whisky production, personally led by a member of the team. It also includes a tasting of three St. Kilian products for participants aged 18 and over, a St. Kilian nosing glass to keep and a visit to the distillery shop. The Cask Experience Tour has a different focus: it includes a visit to the Private Cask Warehouse and a tasting of cask-strength whisky drawn directly from the cask, also for participants aged 18 and over.

The World Whisky Tour takes you to the World Whisky Lounge, with more than 1,000 bottles of international whiskies. The tours therefore differ in focus: a production tour and tasting, a cask warehouse and cask-strength whisky, or international bottles in the lounge. Tour details and collection size may change; check the operator’s current information before planning your visit.

St. Kilian Distillers operates a whisky distillery in Rüdenau, where whisky is distilled. The distillery is described in tourism materials as continental Europe’s largest single malt whisky distillery; this status may change over time.

Church Square, Parish Church and Ottilienbrunnen

Church Square is characterized by half-timbered houses. Several periods of construction meet in the parish church of St. Ottilia: the choir dates from 1711/12, the nave incorporates medieval components, and the roof turret dates from 1825. These different dates make the building’s history visible in specific parts of the church.

The Ottilienbrunnen fountain is located in the center of Rüdenau on Hauptstraße and is widely regarded as a symbol of the town. A listed monument, it includes a stone sculpture of Saint Ottilia; its sandstone surround is dated 1908. The square, church and fountain thus offer different ways to appreciate Rüdenau’s townscape.

Hiking: Forest Nativity Scene and R1

A circular trail about 3 km long leads through the forest to a nativity scene on a hill. It depicts the infant Jesus in the stable and gives the route a clear connection to the Christmas season. A hike also starts at the sports ground in Rüdenau and initially climbs uphill parallel to the Winnegraben.

The R1 Rüdenau Mountain Hike is a certified quality circular hiking trail recognized by the Odenwald Club. Its certification criteria promise a special nature and hiking experience. An archived tourist route description lists the R1 as 13.6 km long, moderately difficult, with 370 meters of elevation gain and a duration of 3 hours and 52 minutes; the classification and published measurements may be revised. In terms of length, the approximately 3 km loop to the forest nativity scene is therefore much shorter than the mountain hike.
