Discover Großheubach from several perspectives: vineyards and orchards shape the landscape on Bischofsberg, historic buildings take center stage in the old town, and at Engelberg, pilgrimage history meets paths through vineyards and forests. For your stay, this gives you a clear choice between wine, local history, hiking and the Main River. The right hotel base depends on which of these interests you want to focus on.

Vineyards on Bischofsberg

The climatically favorable Bischofsberg in the Lower Main region includes around 50 hectares of vineyards, interspersed with orchards. A wine trail has been there since 1989, created by the Großheubach winegrowers’ association. This means you can include winegrowing in your travel plans both by exploring the vineyard landscape and by following a trail created specifically for that purpose.

The village’s wine scene also includes numerous Häckerwirtschaften, traditional seasonal wine taverns. Wine tastings are offered there, and wines can also be purchased directly from producers. If you are planning a tasting or a purchase, check the opening hours of the relevant Häckerwirtschaft in advance.

Town Hall, Church and Wine History

The historic town hall was built in 1611/1612 in the Old Franconian half-timbered style as the residence of a subordinate official for the Prozelten district. Today, it marks the entrance to Großheubach’s historic old town. The building brings together its former administrative function and half-timbered construction.

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter also shapes the town’s architectural history: it acquired its present appearance between 1895 and 1897. The Abendanz House adds a connection to the history of wine trading. In the 18th century, it was a branch office of an important Franconian wine merchant.

Engelsstaffeln and Hiking Paths to Engelberg

The historic route from Großheubach to Engelberg climbs the Engelsstaffeln, a flight of 612 stone steps. Six wayside chapels featuring scenes from the Passion and Stations of the Cross line the ascent. Engelberg’s religious history also goes back a long way: a monastery was established there in 1630, after the number of pilgrims had increased.

An alternative hike to Engelberg runs from Großheubach through vineyards and forests between Großheubach and Miltenberg. You can therefore choose between different routes: the Engelsstaffeln are defined by their steps and chapels, while the alternative hike passes through vineyards and forests.

Other routes put hiking in Großheubach in a broader context. The Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail passes through, among other places, Großwallstadt, Obernburg, Elsenfeld, Rück, Erlenbach, Klingenberg, Großheubach, Miltenberg and Bürgstadt. The Eselsweg, which is over 111 kilometers long, runs from Schlüchtern or Bad Orb via Großheubach to other towns. The Großheubach 1 Cultural Trail, “Von Hecke zu Häcke in Hebboch,” leads through the forests of Busigberg and Nebelkappe. The routes differ in their course and length; check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Main River also offers opportunities nearby: at river kilometer 120.8, Großheubach has a landing stage marked with a “Gelbe Welle” (“Yellow Wave”) for river travelers. It complements the hiking routes on land with a stopping point for people traveling on the river.
