Warngau offers several distinct themes for a short visit: churches and chapels with notable construction and dedication dates, a spring-fed swimming pond on the edge of Osterwarngau, and cross-country ski trails in Warngau and Wall. You can choose what to explore based on the season and your personal interests. Snow conditions are key for cross-country skiing; swimming conditions may vary seasonally. This lets you plan cultural history, swimming and winter sports as separate parts of your trip.

Churches, Chapels and Local History

The parish church of St. John the Baptist in Oberwarngau stands on the church hill, known locally as “Kirchbichl.” The present-day parish church of St. Margaret in Wall was built in the early 16th century and is a late Gothic tuff-stone building in its basic structure. The chapel of St. Michael in Hinterberg was consecrated in 1758. The Nüchternbrunn forest chapel originated around 1710 as a wooden hermitage; the St. John chapel in Einhaus is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.

The dates range from the construction of St. Margaret in the early 16th century to the origins of Nüchternbrunn around 1710 and the consecration of St. Michael in 1758. These dates refer to different events: a construction period, the origins of a wooden hermitage, and a consecration. Together with the local name “Kirchbichl,” the churches and chapels offer different starting points for exploring Warngau’s cultural history.

Swimming Pond and Cross-Country Ski Trails

The municipality’s artificial swimming pond lies on the edge of Osterwarngau. It is fed by natural spring water from Taubenberg and is 2.20 metres deep at its deepest point. Both its man-made construction and natural spring inflow shape the pond’s character. It is also worth bearing in mind that swimming conditions may vary seasonally. If the pond is to be a main focus of your stay, check the conditions for your planned dates.

There are two cross-country ski trails of different lengths: the trail in Warngau is 5 kilometres long, with access points at the sports field or Brandweg. The 7.5-kilometre trail in Wall starts at the sports facility in Wall. The difference in length is 2.5 kilometres, and the listed access points also differ. You can compare the trails by distance and starting point. Snow conditions are a separate consideration for both trails, so check them before planning your outing.

A Lookout Tower Nearby

In the surrounding area of the destination, the Taubenberg region is home to a historic lookout tower, 30 metres high and built from limestone blocks. The City of Munich had it built between 1910 and 1911. Its building material, height and construction dates make it another historic structure in the region, complementing the churches and religious sites.

Additional Culture in the Wider Miesbach Destination

In the wider Miesbach destination, the Waitzinger Keller cultural centre hosts opera, operetta, musicals, cabaret, concerts, children’s events, traditional customs events and exhibitions throughout the year. As the programme may change, check the current dates before visiting.

With a core collection of more than 3,000 objects, the Miesbach Local History Museum presents the natural and cultural landscape of the Oberland. The collection includes examples of Miesbach furniture painting, religious folk art from the Miesbach pilgrimage era, and tools and equipment from guilds and crafts. A farmhouse parlour, a shoemaker’s workshop and a hatmaker’s workshop offer further insights into the collection.
