Rottach-Egern lies on the southern shore of Lake Tegernsee, set against an impressive mountain backdrop. The town offers a variety of reasons to visit: the Wallberg, water-based activities, a family museum dedicated to horses, and seasonal traditional events.

Wallberg: Walks, Panoramic Views and a Natural Toboggan Run

At over 1,700 metres high, the Wallberg is Lake Tegernsee’s local mountain. Activities range from leisurely walks to challenging hikes; plan your day according to the type of activity you are looking for. The Wallbergbahn takes visitors up the Wallberg, where panoramic views extend across Lake Tegernsee and the Alps. Check the current timetable before travelling, as operating hours may change. Paragliders also take off from the Wallberg, making use of the favourable winds around Lake Tegernsee. Another activity is the natural toboggan run, which is more than six kilometres long and the longest in Germany. Its seasonal operation may vary, so check the current operating conditions in advance.

Water Activities and a Museum

The See- und Warmbad Rottach-Egern has a large sports pool, a whirlpool and air-bubble loungers. For children, there are shallow pools with different water temperatures of up to 33°C, connected by a water slide; there are also play equipment and a water bell. The pool complex thus combines sports-oriented water activities with playful features for children. Opening arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.

Horses take centre stage at the Gsotthaber Hof Museum. This family museum gives children the opportunity to see, hear and feel. Another cultural landmark is the Malerwinkel in Egerner Bay, which has inspired painters, poets and composers in their work. The museum and the Malerwinkel offer different perspectives: one focuses on horses, the other on the connection between landscape and artistic creation.

Traditional Customs and Seasonal Events

The traditional Rosstag takes place every year on the last Sunday in August; the date may differ if the organisers change it. The Almabtrieb takes place annually in late autumn, though the exact dates vary. The two events therefore fall at different times of the year: late summer and late autumn. If either event determines when you travel, check the exact dates in advance.

The Holy Sepulchre in St. Laurentius parish church is another seasonal attraction. During Holy Week, changing Passion scenes are displayed there as life-size freestanding figures. As this display is tied to Holy Week, check whether it will be open to visitors before your trip.

Getting There and Planning

The transport network affiliation is also relevant when planning your journey: since December 2023, Rottach-Egern has been part of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). One ticket lets you travel on all participating transport operators. As network affiliations and ticket rules may change, check the current fare information before travelling.
