Otterfing is situated on Ice Age moraine hills in the foothills of the Alps. Two different aspects are central to a stay here: the local churches and their historical associations, and hikes through named districts and destinations. When choosing a trail, its route—and, where specified, its length and duration—can be particularly helpful. The train station and cross-country ski trail round out this overview with travel connections and a winter option that depends on snow conditions.

Churches with different historical associations

The parish church of St. George was built around 1530 in the late Gothic style. Its distinctive church tower is 40 metres high and was constructed in 1584 to plans by the Bavarian court architect Friedrich Sustris. This means two construction phases can be distinguished at St. George: the church, built around 1530, and the later construction of the tower. Those interested in architecture will find both a late Gothic church and a tower with a precisely stated year of construction and architect.

The districts also have churches with their own historical points of reference. The branch church of St. Valentine in Bergham was built in 1523, replacing an earlier building from the 14th century. The history of the branch church of the Holy Cross in Wettlkam dates back to the 13th century; a chapel and cemetery were first mentioned there in 1215. The details highlight different aspects: at St. Valentine, the year of construction and the earlier building take precedence, while at the Holy Cross, the focus is on an early written reference. You can therefore explore the churches through their construction histories or the specific historical dates mentioned for each.

Choose a hike by route and duration

The Jasberg Loop starts at Otterfing S-Bahn station, heads to Jasberg, and returns to Otterfing station via Erlach and Wettlkam. It is about 10 kilometres long and takes approximately 3 hours. This makes it the longer of the two tours described here with a stated distance and duration. Its route links Jasberg with several named places and returns to the starting point.

The “Through Woods and Fields” hike is shorter, at about 5.5 kilometres and approximately 2 hours. It also starts at Otterfing station and passes through Erlkam and the Teufelsgraben to the organically farmed ArcheHof Schlickenrieder. The two trails with stated distances therefore differ both in approximate duration and in route: the Jasberg Loop returns to the station, while “Through Woods and Fields” lists the ArcheHof as its destination.

Another hike runs from Otterfing station through Holzham and the Teufelsgraben to Palnkam, then returns to the station via Palnkamer StraĂźe. Here, the place names indicate the route, but no distance or duration is given. The hiking trails around Otterfing are marked with yellow trail signs. This local guidance complements the specific route details.

Train station and winter option

Otterfing station is on the Mangfall Valley Railway from Rosenheim to Holzkirchen. It is served by S-Bahn trains and regional trains connecting Otterfing with Munich and other places in the region. Since several of the hikes mentioned start at the station, it can also serve as a shared starting point for planning your routes.

In winter, the cross-country ski trail provides an additional seasonal option: it can be used when there is sufficient snow and is groomed for both classic and skating. Snow conditions are therefore a prerequisite for using it. This offers a clear distinction for planning your stay between the hikes described and the conditional winter option.
