Gmund lies on the northern shore of Lake Tegernsee and is known as the “gateway to Lake Tegernsee.” Local history and culture go hand in hand here with walking, hiking and cycling routes, as well as leisure activities. The railway station is a starting point for several routes: the LiteraTour and two hiking trails begin there. Other cycling routes pass through Gmund. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether culture, exercise or a particular leisure activity should shape your stay.

Local History Museum, Town History and Culture

The Jagerhaus Gmund houses a local history museum with exhibitions about the Mangfall, Max Obermayr and traditional dress in its various forms. The building was constructed as a butcher’s house in 1793 and became the residence of royal gamekeeper Johann Mayer in 1815. A visit to the museum therefore connects the building’s local history with insights into topics from the surrounding area.

Gmund’s regular cultural program includes GmundArt exhibitions and “Musi am See.” For specific event dates, it is worth checking the current schedule. Gmund Papier also offers public factory tours: they take place on the second and fourth Friday of each month at 1 p.m. and offer a behind-the-scenes look at paper production. If you plan to take a tour, check the date again before you travel.

The family-friendly LiteraTour #10 “Gmunder Originale” offers another way to explore Gmund. This easy literary walk has eight stops and begins at the railway station. It can therefore be combined with arrival by train, without assuming a specific walking time or additional route.

Hiking and Cycling: Routes by Length and Difficulty

For a shorter hike, the Tegernsee Höhenweg “Mit der Bahn in die Berge” is an easy, family-friendly 5.8-kilometer route starting at Gmund railway station. The Großer Rundwanderweg Gmund also starts there: an easy, family-friendly circular route covering 12.7 kilometers. Comparing the distances can help you choose how much time to allow, without assigning a hiking time to either route.

“Neureuth von Gmund” is another option: this family-friendly circular route is of moderate difficulty, covers 10.4 kilometers and starts at Gmund Gasse. It differs from the two easy routes starting at the railway station in both distance and stated difficulty.

For cyclists, the 20-kilometer Tegernsee-Seerundweg is an easy, family-friendly cycling route that passes through Gmund. The Bodensee-Königssee long-distance cycle route and the München-Venezia long-distance cycle route also pass through the town. Gmund is also the starting point for the Alpine crossing to Sterzing. The M-Wasserweg is an 82-kilometer route from Munich to Gmund. These routes have different starting and ending points, so choose the tour that suits you rather than treating them as one continuous section.

Leisure Activities at Oedberg

The Tegernsee climbing forest is a high ropes course integrated into the existing mountain forest at Oedberg in Gmund. It has 78 obstacles across seven courses and a 130-meter-long Flying Fox. For children up to seven years old, there are the “Fuchsbau” and “Bärenhöhle” children’s courses; from age eight, they can use the higher courses. Check the age requirements again before your visit.

Oedberg also has a winding, approximately 200-meter-long tubing track with a rope lift, where visitors travel downhill and back up. The Oedberg summer toboggan run is 1.4 kilometers long, runs through woodland and meadows, and is described as an adventure for all ages. Its operation depends on the season and weather. These activities therefore offer a different focus from the cultural sites and routes starting at the railway station.

Getting There and Planning the Right Stay

Gmund has its own railway station and can be reached from Munich every hour on the Bayerische Regiobahn. Since December 10, 2023, the town has been part of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV); buses and trains in the Miesbach district can be used with a single ticket. If you plan to travel by train, you can factor both the connection and the routes’ starting points into your plans.

This way, your choices can reflect your actual plans without requiring you to combine the different activities into a fixed itinerary.
