A seasonal Japanese garden, an Old Town tour by arrangement and the Wern Valley Cycle Route give Thüngen a range of different highlights: gardens, local history and cycling. When planning your visit, consider which activities are tied to specific months or groups—and which local themes you can explore independently during your stay.

Japanese Garden and Old Town Tours

From May to September, Ruth and Horst Benkert show visitors their Japanese garden, which covers around 500 m². Its design includes a pond, a stream with a waterfall and seating; Far Eastern decorations, bamboo, ornamental maples, and rock and stone features complete the grounds. Booking ahead is requested. As the garden is open seasonally, check the arrangements for your visit in advance.

The German-language tours of the Old Town also require prior arrangements. They are offered to groups, including families, clubs, companies and class reunions, and last around 90 minutes. The meeting point is the Ludwigslinde at Planplatz. The tour goes through Planplatz, to St. George’s Church and through the Bangerts; it focuses on historic sites and former Jewish institutions. So the focus is not just on a single building, but on local history at several named stops.

The garden visit and the tour require different kinds of planning: booking ahead is requested for the garden, while the tour takes place by arrangement. If you are considering a group tour, confirm the date in advance. The Wern Valley Cycle Route, also known as the Wern Cycle Route, runs directly through Thüngen and offers a different perspective: it is a cycling route through the town, while the tour covers specific sites in its history.

Castle Complex and Group Experience

The castle complex in Thüngen, set in the Bangerts park, comprises Burgschloss, Spitalschloss and Alter Stock. The complex is privately occupied. If you are interested in the architecture and local history, you will find several clearly named parts, but should bear in mind that it is privately used when considering what to expect from a castle visit.

A separate group experience is the Herzog von Franken whisky and beer tasting at Schlossgut Thüngen. On request, it is offered to groups of 20 or more and includes a three-course meal in the castle cellar. Arranging a date therefore also depends on the group size and the date you want; check availability directly. The garden, Old Town tour and tasting differ not only in subject, but also in when and for whom arrangements are required.

Main-Spessart as a Regional Setting

The wider destination of Main-Spessart offers a distinct setting for exploring nature and culture. Vineyards, water and forests define the holiday region. In Spessart Nature Park, options range from short walks to multi-day hikes; the Spessart Trails carry the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal.

The Main Hiking Trail offers a sense of scale: it is around 500 kilometres long, with just under 100 kilometres running through the district of Main-Spessart. This section connects Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. The two figures distinguish the length of the entire trail from the section within the district—a useful point of reference when considering the regional scope of a hike.

For a cultural and historical perspective, consider Karlstadt’s Old Town: founded around 1200, it preserves buildings and urban features that have survived for more than seven centuries. The Paper Mill Museum in Homburg reveals another side of the region’s cultural history. It preserves production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, the living quarters of the papermaking family and a demonstration workshop. In addition, a hand papermaking workshop still produces fine handmade papers in its fifth generation. The Old Town and the paper mill thus offer two different ways to explore the past: preserved urban structures on the one hand, and crafts and production history on the other.

To plan your trip, you can first sort Thüngen’s activities by season, group requirements and interests. Then decide whether to focus on the garden, local history or cycling, and whether to include themes from the wider destination of Main-Spessart. For activities with scheduling or organisational requirements, it is advisable to make the necessary arrangements before your visit.
