Lohr a.Main combines castle history and museums with cycling tours along the Main and in the Bikewald Spessart. When planning, one simple question can help: Should the stay focus mainly on historical topics or on an outdoor tour?
Castle, Spessart Museum and Lohr’s Snow White
The listed Kurmainzer Schloss castle complex in Lohr a.Main has four towers. In the former castle of the Counts of Rieneck and the Electors of Mainz, the Spessart Museum presents the cultural history of one of Germany’s largest forest regions across more than 2,000 square metres. Its motto is “People and Forest”; its themes include the Spessart, its history and the people who shaped it, as well as Snow White and the famous mirror.
Maria Sophia Margaretha Catharina von Erthal is also associated with Lohr: she was born in Lohr Castle in 1725 and is considered a possible historical model for Snow White. At the Spessart Museum, Lohr’s Snow White hosts a story hour at 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays from April to October. If you plan to attend, check the specific date before travelling.
Other museum experiences offer a different perspective. The Lohr School Museum brings the school history of the past century to life with historic classrooms and old teaching materials. Housed in a former transformer hut, the Insulator Museum displays a collection of insulators from around the world.
Old town, procession and views
Lohr’s Good Friday procession passes through the old town every year on Good Friday. It begins at St. Michael’s Church and depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ with 13 life-size groups of figures. It was first mentioned in a document in 1658 and was added to the Bavarian State Directory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in March 2026. As the date falls on Good Friday, check the relevant event date when planning your trip.
The listed Fischerviertel is a historic district. From the Bayersturm tower, you can enjoy views over Lohr’s old town and the Main, extending as far as the Spessart. Together with the castle and museum, this offers another way to explore the city’s history without limiting your stay to a single museum topic.
Cycling, the Main and other leisure activities
Lohr a.Main lies on the Main Cycle Route and is a good starting point for a ride along this long-distance cycle route. In the Bikewald Spessart, Lohr is part of Bike Area 1. Forest and field tracks of varying difficulty, most of which are easy to ride, offer options for mountain bikers, touring cyclists and e-bike riders. Information about difficulty and trail conditions can help you choose the type of ride, without assuming that a description of one route applies to all trails.
From the Lohr Mainlände, between the two Main bridges, the Maintal-Bummler sets off on circular trips from April to the end of October. This seasonal service operates at a different time of year from the Good Friday procession and the story hour held on set Sundays. If you are planning activities for specific days, you can take these date ranges into account when choosing your travel dates.
Near Lohr a.Main is the Wöhrde, a cultural landscape close to the town featuring wet meadows, tall-herb communities, springs, ponds, traditional orchards and the River Lohr. For another leisure option, the Main-Spessart-Bad in Lohr has a heated 50-metre swimming pool, a large non-swimmer pool, an 89-metre water slide and a diving tower with platforms up to five metres high.
