Oberreute can be explored through a range of hiking and cultural themes. In the Hausbach Gorge, a varied circular trail with bridges, a climbing rope, a ropeway and rest areas winds through the Oberreute section. Martinshöhe, the signposted hiking trail network and local history provide further distinct focal points.

Trails and views

The circular trail through the Oberreute section of the Hausbach Gorge is designed for the whole family. Its features include bridges, a climbing rope, a ropeway and rest areas. The facilities therefore include both active elements and places to relax. The family-friendly design and trail features are key aspects of this route.

At 953 m, Martinshöhe is Oberreute’s local mountain and is topped by a wayside cross. From there, views extend across Oberreute, the neighbouring communities and the “Unterland.” The panorama stretches from the Nagelfluhkette ridge to the east to the 2,502 m-high Säntis to the southwest. The view therefore takes in both the town and its surroundings, as well as notable landmarks in two directions.

Oberreute has around 40 km of signposted hiking trails. One specific route with detailed information is the Oberreute Trilogie circular trail: it is 4.82 km long, takes 1 hour and 18 minutes, and is rated easy. It starts at the Oberreute start and welcome point in the spa gardens. When choosing between this circular trail and the Hausbach Gorge, you can compare the former’s length, duration and difficulty with the family-friendly features and facilities of the latter.

Another option is Stage 16 of the Wasserläufer route in the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy. It leads from Oberreute via Martinshöhe and Wildrosenmoos through the Hausbach Gorge to Weiler-Simmerberg. This means that, alongside a circular trail starting in the spa gardens, you can also choose a stage with a named destination.

Local history and special themes

The “Heimatstube” museum in Oberreute presents local history across six rooms. Individual guided tours of the museum can be arranged. The Oberreute Trilogie circular trail also introduces visitors to local history, under the theme “At borders and yet boundless.” The theme of local history thus appears in two different formats: as a museum exhibition and as the subject of a walking tour.

The SINNRAUM is located in Beule, a district of Oberreute. It is an ecumenical, spiritual and meditative space for mindfulness. It serves as a place for personal reflection and a quiet breathing space from everyday life. The cultural objects housed there include the “Lebensbuch” (Book of Life): created by artist Max Schmelcher, the book is made from 4,000-year-old dried moorland. The SINNRAUM and the book thus combine a meditative approach with a specific work and material.

Oberreute offers a range of themes to consider when choosing a destination: circular trails and stages, viewpoints, local history and spiritual themes. The routes described differ in format and direction; the cultural attractions each have their own focus, from the museum and historical walking tour to the SINNRAUM.
