If you are planning a stay in Scheidegg, you can plan your days around three very different destinations: the “Skywalk” treetop walk, the Scheidegg Waterfalls and the Reptile Zoo. These attractions showcase forest, gorge and wildlife; their specific location and route details can help you choose the focus of your stay. They differ in form: a treetop walk, a marked trail to the waterfalls and a zoo with indoor and outdoor areas.

Skywalk and forest knowledge

The “Skywalk” treetop walk at Waldwelt Skywalk Allgäu is located above Scheidegg in the Allgäu at an elevation of around 1,000 metres. More than 30 different tree species grow in Waldwelt; the silver fir is the most common. In the wider Lindau travel destination, the Plenterwaldweg trail runs from the Kurhaus Scheidegg to just before the entrance to Waldwelt Skywalk Allgäu. Nine stations along the trail provide information about the Plenterwald forest. The Plenterwaldweg complements the treetop walk with a focus on forest knowledge.

Waterfalls and Rohrach Gorge

The Scheidegg Waterfalls are around a 20-minute walk from the centre of Scheidegg. The marked hiking trail leads out of the town centre along Bräuhausstraße and through the district of Rickenbach to the entrance. The time given refers to the route to the entrance; it should not be taken as the duration of a complete visit. The waterfalls are among Bavaria’s “100 most beautiful geotopes”, making them one of the Free State’s special natural treasures. As you descend to the waterfalls, the view opens onto the Rohrach Gorge, which is up to 200 metres deep. It is the largest nature reserve in the district of Lindau and enjoys special protected status.

Reptile Zoo: Terrariums, tropical house and outdoor enclosures

The Scheidegg Reptile Zoo adds wildlife to the nature experiences, with more than 50 naturally designed terrariums. The animals include crocodiles, lizards, monitor lizards, venomous and non-venomous snakes, as well as spiders and scorpions. Visitors can explore the tropical house and outdoor enclosure; the zoo has been privately run since it was established in 1973. The Reptile Zoo is fully accessible both indoors and outdoors.

More nature and transport options in the wider Lindau travel destination

The Eistobel offers another way to experience nature in the wider Lindau travel destination. In the nature reserve, the waters of the Obere Argen cascade downhill over several waterfalls along a 3-kilometre hiking trail. A visitor pavilion provides information before guests descend into the Eistobel Gorge. The route descriptions highlight different features: in Scheidegg, a marked trail leads from the town centre to the waterfall entrance; at the Eistobel, the hiking trail follows the waterfalls.

In the wider Lindau travel destination, Nonnenhorn has a centrally located railway station. Boat services from the landing stage connect to Lindau, Bregenz, Meersburg, Konstanz and Mainau Island. Check current timetables before planning; train services and seasonal boat connections may change.
