In Weismain, historic town houses and the town wall meet themed trails covering a range of subjects, from geological history to the landscape around Kalkberg. During your stay, you can choose between local history, museum exhibits and routes related to nature and culture.

Town History and Geological History

Weismain’s town centre is enclosed by a well-preserved town wall, giving it a distinct historic outline. The street market in Weismain’s old town was laid out in the early 13th century. On Am Markt street, historic town houses have half-timbered upper floors. Here, the early date of the street market and the construction of the houses stand side by side as two specific features of the old town.

The Kastenhof adds another perspective on history: it was built between 1701 and 1703 to plans by Johann Leonhard Dientzenhofer. The Geological History Time Trail lies in the moat beside the Kastenhof. Information panels, different ground surfaces and sculptures bring geological history to life. This area therefore brings together a dated historic building and a trail focused on natural history.

The NordJURA Museum covers topics including fortifications, the Thirty Years’ War and religious fragmentation. While the town hall is being renovated, the permanent exhibition can currently only be visited to a limited extent because the St. Martin town library has moved into the museum rooms. If you are planning a museum visit, check the town’s latest notice beforehand.

Themed Trails with Different Focuses

The Water Experience Trail starts at the Kneipp facility by the municipal works depot and follows the Weismain river to a weir with a water playground. Another thematic route awaits you on the Schlauwienix Trail: it connects Weismain with the Kordigast and shares information about the region’s nature, culture and history along the hiking route. The route thus extends beyond Weismain.

One hike starts at Weismain’s market square by sign 1701 and follows the Geutenreuth branch route towards the Baiersdorf hiking car park. The Urban Ecology Nature Trail takes about an hour and a half. The Kalkberg Trail, by contrast, focuses on a nature and cultural history hike with 16 stops. It explores a cultural landscape shaped and cultivated over centuries. Open limestone areas, pines and junipers define the landscape on Kalkberg. The approximate duration of the Urban Ecology Nature Trail and the number of stops on Kalkberg are different points of reference when choosing a route.

Seasonal Highlight and Regional Context

Weismain’s Easter fountains, decorated with painted eggs, are usually on display from Palm Sunday through the Sunday after Easter. If you would like this tradition to coincide with your stay, take the usual period into account when planning and check the latest visitor information.

In the wider travel destination of Lichtenfels, the Basket Market adds its own seasonal highlight: it takes place every year on the third weekend in September. Also in Lichtenfels, the 14-kilometre Wickerwork Culture Trail follows nature-friendly routes through the Main meadows and connects Lichtenfels with Michelau. Its 23 information panels cover the history and tradition of basket making, the basket industry and basket trading along the Upper Main. Wickerwork artworks along the route include a willow labyrinth for children near Oberwallenstadt, a willow shell at the river swimming area, and a woven tipi at Ortswiesensee Oberwallenstadt. This focus on Lichtenfels complements Weismain’s town history and themed trails with a subject of its own.
