Hochstadt a.Main lies on the Main, at the geographical center of the Lichtenfels district and in the Gottesgarten am Obermain. The Main meadows, protected natural areas and a long church history give the town a variety of facets. When planning a stay, visitors can therefore take both the landscape and the town’s history into account when choosing their destination.

Main Meadows and Nature

The Main meadows around Hochstadt offer extensive opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Nature and bird sanctuaries surround the entire town. The river landscape and protected nature therefore stand alongside Hochstadt’s cultural heritage as two distinct aspects of the town. For travelers who also consider the surrounding area when making their choice, this landscape is a defining part of the town’s character.

Church History and Landmarks

The first chapel in Hochstadt was built by Langheim Cistercian Abbey in the 14th century and dedicated to Mary. In the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the altarpiece on the high altar is a copy of the Byzantine image of grace Sancta Maria Nive Candidior in Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. These two details offer different ways into the local church history: the origins of an early chapel and a specifically named Marian image with its original in Rome.

The former monastic administrative building is considered the town’s most distinctive landmark. Today it is a district clinic and therapy center, used as a full-time rehabilitation clinic for people with dependencies on drugs, medication and alcohol. The building’s former Cistercian function and its current medical use thus represent two distinct chapters in the town’s history.

Franconian Specialties

Restaurants in the districts of Burgstall, Anger and Obersdorf serve Franconian specialties. For those who factor culinary discoveries into their choice of destination, this offers a distinct regional focus alongside nature and church art. The references to Franconian cuisine are spread across these districts and are not tied to any one specifically named restaurant.

In the broader travel destination of Lichtenfels

Lichtenfels also has its own cultural and historical attractions. The Lichtenfels Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September; it is worth checking the event dates in advance when planning a specific trip. The old town of Lichtenfels has retained its typically Franconian character. The Bamberg Gate and the Kronach Gate are preserved, and parts of the old town wall are still visible. Here, the old town and basket-making traditions take center stage, while Hochstadt’s local character is shaped by its Main meadows and church history.

The 14-kilometer Flechtkultur (Basketry Culture) Adventure Trail connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along nature trails through the Main meadows. Its 23 information boards cover the history and traditions of basketmaking, the basket industry and basket trading on the Upper Main. Near Oberwallenstadt, the trail includes a willow maze for children, a willow shell in the river swimming area and a woven tipi at the Ortswiesensee Oberwallenstadt; other woven artworks are also part of the trail. This combination of trail, information boards and woven artworks brings basket trading in the region to life as a subject in its own right.

The Lichtenfels Town Palace houses municipal collections on the history of beer and brewing, the railway and basket trading. As exhibition content may change, it is a good idea to check which collections are currently on display before visiting.
