A historical trail with twelve information panels and local history centered on the Isar give Wörth a.d. Isar two different ways to explore: outdoors, you encounter history at buildings and squares; in the museum, several aspects of the town are brought together. Other highlights include St. Laurentius, with Romanesque architectural elements and a Baroque extension, as well as walks along the banks of the Isar. You can make architectural history, local life, and the landscape the focus of your visit.

Local history on a walk

The historical trail leads through Wörth a.d. Isar. Information panels mounted on buildings and at squares explain the history of the sites concerned. The trail comprises twelve panels in total, with historical and other interesting information that you can discover while walking through the town. Each stop focuses on a particular place and its history. This sets the trail apart from an exhibition that brings several topics together: here, you explore local history as you walk, using the buildings and squares themselves.

The local history museum and the town’s themes

The Wörth an der Isar Local History Museum tells the story of Wörth’s local history, with a focus on the Isar. The exhibition covers the castle, tavern and brewery, post and railway, church, municipality, and school. Exhibits, multimedia stations, audio stations, and a fold-out game present these topics in different ways. Isaria, an Isar mermaid, accompanies children through the museum on a journey into the past. While the local history trail explores the history of individual buildings and squares, the museum offers a broader thematic perspective on different aspects of local history. Visitors particularly interested in the town’s connection to the Isar will find this focus reflected in the museum as well.

St. Laurentius and the former castle

The parish church of St. Laurentius preserves parts of an older building: the western apse and adjoining sections of the nave walls are from a Romanesque church or chapel dating to the 11th or 12th century. In the last third of the 17th century, the church was substantially extended eastward, and the surviving Romanesque building was given a Baroque vault. The church is also a pilgrimage church dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel. It therefore brings together Romanesque architectural elements and a later Baroque alteration, while its role as a pilgrimage church adds another religious dimension.

The former Wörth Castle is a two-storey building with a hipped roof and mezzanine. Its core dates from the 17th or 18th century. This dating places part of its architectural history in context; the building’s described form can be considered separately. Together with the history of St. Laurentius, the castle broadens the picture of the different historic buildings in Wörth a.d. Isar.

The Isar Valley, events, and water sports

Wörth a.d. Isar lies in the Isar Valley, where walks are possible along the riverbanks. This offers a different focus from the information panels and architectural history: you can also explore the town through the riverside landscape. Wörth Castle Park hosts regular events organized by the Kultur im Schlosspark Wörth e. V. association. If an event date is important to your visit, check the relevant dates in advance.

The Waketoolz Wakepark, formerly WakeLake, is a recreational facility on a lake in the eastern part of the municipality. The former name Wakelake is associated with water skiing on a former gravel pit lake in Wörth a.d. Isar. Before you travel, check the current name and operating details if water skiing is an important part of your plans.
