Untermühlhausen combines nature and cultural attractions with a signposted cycling route through the village. Two specific details are important when planning your trip: the trail near the “Seven Springs” is closed until October 2026, and the Rogation procession at Rasso Chapel takes place every year around the feast day of Saint Rasso. Historical references also span a tentative date of around 740 to construction events in 1957. This lets you explore the landscape, cycling and local church history as separate points of interest.

Nature and Cycling Route

The “Seven Springs” and the adjacent hillside forest are protected as natural monuments. The trail closure near the springs is a separate matter: it remains in effect until October 2026. If your visit falls during this period, check the latest status in advance. The protected status of the natural features and the trail closure affect different aspects of your planning.

The signposted “Kaufering – Weil and back” cycling route passes through Untermühlhausen, where the Verlorener Bach rises. The route then follows the valley of the stream along a quiet cycling path to Geretshausen. The named cycling route thus continues from the village through the valley to Geretshausen.

Church, Local History and Rasso Chapel

The Catholic parish church of St. Benedict is located in Untermühlhausen. Medieval and early modern remains are present underground in the area of the church and its predecessor building. Records suggest that Untermühlhausen was already in existence around 740, when Benediktbeuern Monastery was founded. The village’s history therefore ranges from this tentative early date to archaeological remains from the Middle Ages and early modern period.

Rasso Chapel is picturesquely situated on Burgselberg in Untermühlhausen. It was built in early 1957 and consecrated at the end of May that year.

Every year around June 19, the feast day of Saint Rasso, a Rogation procession is held, with Holy Mass at Rasso Chapel and a stop at the Rasso memorial stone. In bad weather, it is held at St. Benedict Parish Church. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the date in advance. The weather determines the location of the service.

Cultural History in the Wider Destination of Penzing

In the wider destination of Penzing, the Frauenkapelle, also known as the Feldkapelle, was built and endowed in 1722 on the southern edge of the village. Its builders and founders were Simon Erhart, a priest in Bergen, and Johann Wiedemann, a wagon maker from Penzing.

In 1806, lightning struck the Feldkapelle; due to a lack of funds, it could not be rebuilt. As of December 2022, the bell bearing the inscription “Johanns Windaman von Penzing 1723” was the only surviving part.

Another chapter in Penzing’s building history is the Catholic parish church of St. Martin. Its core dates from the 15th century; around 1719, the church was extended and given a Baroque makeover.
