Herrsching lies on the eastern shore of Lake Ammersee and is a starting point for hikes and other tours. Local history takes center stage in the Archaeological Park; by the lakeshore, you’ll find the Kurpark and various tours. A cycling tour leads from Herrsching to Starnberg. To choose where to stay, consider whether your focus is on culture, time by the water or a route that takes you beyond Herrsching.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

S-Bahn line 8 runs from Munich to Herrsching. From Herrsching station, it’s about 500 meters to the landing stage. This gives you two clear reference points on arrival: the station and the landing stage by the water. Check the current timetable for specific departure times.

Archaeology and Architectural History

The Archaeological Park is laid out around a reconstruction of the aristocratic church and documents around 1,500 years of the town’s history. The exhibition includes a life-size figure of a Bavarian man from grave 9, shown in full attire. This brings together two distinct perspectives: the reconstructed church at the heart of the park and a specific exhibit from a particular grave. If you’re interested in Herrsching’s history, you can connect the town’s long history with a single archaeological find.

Another historical landmark is the Kurparkschlösschen. Built in 1888 in the style of Italian aristocratic palaces, it served as a country house and summer residence for the artist Ludwig Scheuermann. Its rooms are used as the municipality’s wedding venue; the Herrsching cultural association rents out the Kurparkschlösschen for celebrations, concerts and art exhibitions. Its original use as a summer residence thus differs from its uses as a wedding venue and event space. If you’re planning an event, check in advance what options are currently available.

By the Lake and Out on a Tour

Herrsching Kurpark lies right on the shore of Lake Ammersee. Route 15 follows the lakeshore north of Herrsching as far as Herrschinger Kreuz. Route 14 starts and ends in Herrsching, right by Lake Ammersee; the lakeside promenade has a playground, an outdoor swimming area and places to eat. The routes differ in their focus: Route 15 leads to a named destination, while Route 14 starts and ends in Herrsching.

For a route that takes you beyond Herrsching, consider a 22.9-kilometer cycling tour. It starts in Herrsching, ends in Starnberg and passes through Kiental, Erling, Aschering, Jägersbrunn and the Maisinger Schlucht on its way to Lake Starnberg. Unlike Route 14, this cycling tour ends in Starnberg, not Herrsching.

Swimming and Places to Eat

On the final leg of Route 11 back to Herrsching, a fish sandwich at Mato, at the traditional Stumbaum fishery, is recommended. If you plan to make this culinary stop, check in advance what options are currently available.

The Seewinkel bathing area in Herrsching is an outdoor swimming beach on Lake Ammersee; access is available on request. Take this information into account when planning, and check the current arrangements before your visit.
