Trebgast can be explored through three distinct attractions: the highly visible St. John’s Parish Church, the spring-fed bathing lake and the open-air theatre, home to the Trebgast Summer Festival. Local and architectural history, water, exercise and theatre each offer a different focus for a stay. If you’re looking for hotels in Trebgast, consider which of these aspects you want to shape your trip: the historic ensemble, the activities at the lake or a visit to the open-air theatre.

Parish Church and Local History

St. John’s Parish Church is a prominent landmark visible from far away. Together with the rectory, ossuary, community centre and the associated retaining walls, it forms an impressive architectural ensemble within the town. The present parish church is the third building on this site: construction began on 6 September 1742, and the church was consecrated on 24 August 1751. The interior features stucco work by the Italian artist Francesco Andreioli. The church thus offers several perspectives on Trebgast: the ensemble within the townscape, the history of a specific site and the artistic design of the interior.

The Rochus Chapel stands in front of the parish church. Built around 1400, it served as an ossuary until about 1700 and was remodelled in 1726. The chapel houses a small museum featuring a stone pulpit from 1617, baptismal fonts, an epitaph from 1748, a historic clock mechanism and a fresco of St. Roch. It complements the parish church with its own architectural and functional history, as well as historic furnishings. Those interested in local history will find a different perspective here than at the church ensemble.

Bathing Lake and Activity Routes

Trebgast Bathing Lake covers 60,000 square metres, is fed by spring water and is an EU bathing water site. The Trebgast Bathing Lake recreation centre also offers pedal boat rentals. The Activ and Health Park offers a different focus: starting at the bathing lake, it features 22 kilometres of designated routes for Nordic walking, biking and trail running. The lake and park offer different ways to plan your day: rent a pedal boat on the water or explore designated routes for three different activities. Which option best suits your stay depends on whether you’d rather focus on the lake or the activity routes.

Open-Air Theatre and Summer Festival

The Trebgast Open-Air Theatre is performed exclusively by amateur actors from the region. The Trebgast Summer Festival has been held there every year without interruption since 1953. This brings together a local ensemble and a continuous performance tradition. If you’d like to include a performance in your stay, check the dates for your travel period.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

For a focus on cultural history, visit the parish church and Rochus Chapel; the open-air theatre offers its own special attraction with the Summer Festival. The bathing lake and activity park suit a different kind of itinerary, with pedal boat rentals or designated routes for Nordic walking, biking and trail running. If you’re planning to attend a theatre performance, check the Summer Festival dates.
