Neudrossenfeld offers several different starting points for an exploratory trip: the history of trees, church architecture, and routes for cycling and walking. The Linden Tree Museum is in the town center; the approximately 350-year-old dancing linden stands on the slope above the Main Valley. The collection, individual trees, and architecture give the town several cultural highlights, while cycling and walking routes add opportunities for exercise to your plans.
Linden Trees and the Townscape
The Linden Tree Museum opened in September 2014 and displays over 40 exhibits, offering an overview of the different forms of European linden trees. The collection provides a glimpse of different forms; by contrast, Neudrossenfeld’s well-preserved, approximately 350-year-old dancing linden stands alone on the slope above the Main Valley. An overview of European linden forms and a specific local example thus offer two different approaches to the subject.
There is also a dancing linden in Langenstadt near Neudrossenfeld. It stands in the middle of a circular arrangement of eight sandstone columns, joined at ground level by a stone bench. This architectural setting adds a precisely described feature at another part of town to the focus on linden trees.
Church Art and Historic Details
The Holy Trinity Church in Neudrossenfeld is a magnificent building with rich architectural sculpture, a spacious interior, and elaborate furnishings. The ceiling stucco by Giovanni Battista Pedrozzi is a particularly vivid example: angels hold symbols as tendrils with flowers and fruit spread across the ceiling. The pulpit altar has a different history. During the new construction from 1753 to 1757, it was assembled from various older pieces. The church can thus be appreciated both for its finely worked stucco ornaments and for the way older pieces were brought together during the new construction.
Another local destination is the Old Sandstone Bridge over the Red Main, one of Neudrossenfeld’s attractions.
Cycling and Walking
Neudrossenfeld lies directly on the Rotmain Cycle Path. For walks, three circular trails in Heinersreuth, Neudrossenfeld, and Langenstadt also offer shorter routes on the Rot-Main-Auen-Weg. The Rotmainauen Hiking Trail runs from the former state horticultural show grounds in Bayreuth via Heinersreuth and Neudrossenfeld to Langenstadt. You can choose between the Rotmain Cycle Path, shorter walks on three circular trails, and the Rotmainauen Hiking Trail from Bayreuth via Heinersreuth and Neudrossenfeld to Langenstadt. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
In the broader Kulmbach destination
In the broader Kulmbach destination, the nature trail on Kulmbach’s Rehberg hill offers a distinct highlight: it is about four kilometers long and has 21 learning stations. At the Plassenburg, the German Tin Figure Museum contains more than 300,000 individual figures arranged in around 150 dioramas. These destinations offer different themes from Neudrossenfeld’s tree history and church art: the learning stations are the focus of the nature trail, while the museum features its extensive collection arranged in dioramas.
