From the Lucas Cranach Tower, the panoramic view stretches as far as the Main Valley, the Fichtel Mountains and the Thuringian countryside. Together with Baroque churches, a historic village fountain and the Weißenbrunn Kirchweih festival, this makes for a destination with a variety of cultural and scenic highlights. When planning your trip, you can decide whether architectural history, a specific event date, or views and activities should take priority.

Churches, fountains and local history

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Weißenbrunn was built in 1698/99 using older components and is regarded as a gem of Franconian Protestant Baroque church architecture. Its construction period and the older components give the building two historical points of reference. Another aspect of local history is represented by the Jungferkättl Fountain: this village fountain, featuring a water nymph, was created in 1716/17 by Johann Dümlein from Kronach.

The churches also mark different historical periods. St. Giles’ Church is first mentioned in 1398 in the land register of the lordship of Plassenburg. Dr. Martin Luther Church was formally dedicated on October 31, 1954. Together with the Church of the Holy Trinity and the fountain, these dates trace different chapters of local history—from the earliest recorded mention to a 20th-century building.

Kirchweih festival and Brewer and Cooper Museum

The Weißenbrunn Kirchweih festival takes place every year on the fourth weekend in September at Paradiesplatz, in front of the Brewer and Cooper Museum. If you want to make the festival the occasion for your trip, check the dates and program for the specific year. This distinguishes the recurring time slot from the details of any individual event.

Visitors can take part in a beer-brewing seminar at the Weißenbrunn Brewer and Cooper Museum. The seminar is another cultural activity alongside the churches and fountain. If you plan to attend, check the current dates in advance; the Kirchweih festival and the seminar are separate events and are not automatically connected.

Views and other activities

The panoramic view from the Lucas Cranach Tower takes in the Main Valley, the Fichtel Mountains and the Thuringian countryside. These three named regions give the viewpoint a different focus from the buildings and historical dates in the town. The 18-hole golf course of Kronach Golf Club is also near Weißenbrunn. So, alongside cultural and historical attractions, views and golf are other distinct interests to consider when planning your trip.

Landscape and culture in the wider destination of Kronach

Within the wider destination of Kronach, the larger northeastern part of the district lies in the Franconian Forest, a low, rounded, densely wooded mountain range with many valleys and elevations of about 500 to just over 700 meters. The rest of the district lies in the northern part of the Upper Main Hills. This area descends southwest from the Franconian Forest to about 300 to 500 meters and has a varied landscape with escarpments and terraces. The two landscape descriptions illustrate the distinct regional characteristics found within the district.

In Kronach itself, Rosenberg Fortress combines medieval, Renaissance and Baroque defensive architecture. The oldest surviving document mentioning the name Rosenberg dates from 1249. The Franconian Gallery offers a different cultural focus: across 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, it presents 220 masterpieces of painting and sculpture from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods in Franconia. A stay focused on Weißenbrunn can thus be complemented by the wider destination of Kronach’s own cultural and landscape attractions.
