The Abensberg City Museum spans the period from the Neolithic Age to contemporary history. The art trail, Hundertwasser connections and the Abens floodplain add further cultural and natural themes to explore. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on exhibitions, a stroll through the old town or nature.
City history across four floors
The permanent exhibition at the Abensberg City Museum in the Herzogskasten presents objects spanning the period from the Neolithic Age to contemporary history across four floors. The third floor focuses on crafts and work: visitors can see tools used for growing hops and asparagus, as well as for working in quarries and at the Rössler iron foundry. The exhibition also explores the guilds of Abensberg’s master craftspeople. The collection thus brings together a broad historical period and practical insights into a range of fields of work.
All exhibition areas in the city museum are wheelchair accessible. Check this current access information again before your trip.
Old town, art trail and Hundertwasser
Magnificent townhouses, the town hall and the Maderturm tower shape Abensberg’s historic old town. The art trail runs along the medieval town wall, adding to a stroll through the old town. It offers a distinctive way to experience the historic townscape, while the museum focuses on exhibits and the history of crafts.
Another cultural landmark is the 35-metre-high Kuchlbauer Tower, an architectural project inspired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The KunstHausAbensberg displays Hundertwasser’s artworks and artefacts from his life. The two venues offer different perspectives on the artist: an architectural project at one, and works and objects from his life at the other.
History on the go and local tradition
With the “App ins alte Abensberg” app, you can follow a tour through historic Abensberg in the footsteps of Joseph von Hazzi. Alternatively, you can put together individual stops for a personalised tour. This lets you choose between a set tour and a selection of individual stops.
Gillamoos is also part of local tradition. This annual fair dates back to a pilgrimage first recorded in a document in 1313, along with the fair associated with it. The exact event dates vary from year to year; check the dates for your trip. A guided tour of Kuchlbauer’s World of Beer includes a visit to the brewery and a tour of the Kuchlbauer Tower. Check the current availability of this tour before your visit.
Nature and regional produce
The Abens floodplain is a Natura 2000 site (FFH area) and a protected area of European importance because of its significance for flora and fauna. It adds a distinct natural focus alongside the historical and artistic themes. Abensberg is also the home of the asparagus of the same name, a quality product whose PGI designation has been protected since 2011.
In the wider Kelheim travel destination, the southern part of the district, including Abensberg, Neustadt an der Donau, Biburg, Rohr i. NB and Mainburg, is part of the Hallertau. It is considered the world’s largest continuous hop-growing region. This regional context complements the local connection to Abensberg’s quality asparagus with another agricultural speciality.
